MAIN MUSEUMS Musée de la Grande Guerre Though it is actually in Seine-et- Marne, the Musée de la Grande Guerre deserves a mention here, as it offers one of the most comprehensive summaries of the
Great War. Covering the build-up to war, the four years of conflict, and its legacy, a visit to this museum merits at least an afternoon, though you could spend much longer here. Reconstructed trenches, film clips and audio guides take you on a journey through the war from the joint perspective of all nations involved. You can reach Meaux by train from Paris’s Gare de l’Est in 40 minutes. Direct buses travel between Meaux and Charles de

Musée du Fort de la Pompelle Constructed in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, this fort became of paramount importance to the defence of Reims in the Great War, and came under heavy bombardment from the German offensive of 1914. The fort withstood the hundreds of shell strikes, gas attacks, tank and infantry assaults that bombarded it throughout the war. In the 1950s it was renovated and converted into a museum.
Displaying artillery equipment and preserved troops’ living quarters, the museum’s chief attraction is its collection of 560 items of German military headwear – an extensive variety of helmets and caps worn by the different regiments of the German Imperial Army.
