There is a chapel at the far end of the graveyard in which visitors can see a map made of inlaid marble depicting the movements of the US Army in the Saint-Mihiel Salient as well as the names of 284 American soldiers whose remains were never recovered.

Souilly Market American 1st Army Headquarters The town hall of Souilly was used as the headquarters of the American First Army towards the end of the First World War. Sergeant York Historic Trail On the Sergeant York Historic Trail visitors can literally walk in the footsteps of the troops who fought near Chatel-Chéhéry in one of the most brutal battles the American army had ever seen. This trail revives the path blazed by Sergeant York, one of
America’s most decorated military fi gures, who led a legendarily successful part of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive here. Blanc Mont (Sommepy) American Memorial A former German observatory, this memorial is a single tower on the battlefi eld known as ‘Blanc Mont’ (White Mount), which was conquered by the 2nd Marine Division in 1918 after a series of bloody battles in which more than 6,000 US soldiers lost their lives. The tower’s interior staircase leads to a panoramic platform with views over the battlefi eld, allowing visitors to better imagine how the confl ict played out on this site – some remains of trenches are still visible.
