omen hold a very important place in our so- ciety. Right from managing regular chores at home to excelling at the corporate front, women have always proved that nobody can multitask it better than them. Various lead- ers, experts and scholars across the globe
have stressed upon the need to empower girls and women. Today, we know that women empowerment has become the key to eco- nomic growth, political stability, and social transformation.
But why isn’t this happening on a mass scale?
High rate of Violence against Girls and Women on a Mass Scale Astonishingly, rather than uplifting and empowering girls and women for transformation and progress, horrific violence is being spread against them every minute, every hour, every day. Issues like female foeticide are rising at an alarming rate and causing major gender inequality. Some disturbing statistics like: • In South Africa, 2 girls and women are raped every minute. • In India, A rape is committed every 54 minutes. • It has been reported that 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or complete rape in her lifetime.
• In United States, every day 3 women are killed by their male partner.
Also, more than 100 million female babies are killed, aborted, and neglected to die every year. Their only mistake is that they have been born as females.
So finally let us understand what Women Empowerment is! So how do we empower girls and women? And what exactly is women empowerment?
Surprisingly, not much has been done to empower the position of women and girls in our society. Although, most of us use terms like “empowerment” and especially “women’s empowerment”, but the fact is that these words do not exist in most languages and cultures. Shockingly, no concrete steps have ever been taken on women’s empowerment, particularly at the global level.
In order to uplift the position of women in our society we need to find solutions to issues like - economic empowerment, political participation, and girls’ education.
First-Ever Global Survey on Women’s Empowerment - 4GGL As pointed by World Bank, empowerment is not a one day work or a small task which can be undertaken in few hours. It is a process. By following this process, an individual becomes an agent of change.
So, have any steps been taken to empower girls and women globally? 4GGL - 4Girls GLocal Leadership: As a non-profit and a social change movement, 4GGL launched the first-ever global survey on women’s empowerment, targeting today’s millennial women. It is a social change movement to transform the deep-seated mindset and put an end to the sufferings of the girls. The aim of the survey was to ignite the next generation of empowered women leaders and change makers around the world.
A large number of young women and young men from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe were invited to participate in the online survey. The maximum contributions were from the Middle East and the United States. The results showed that: • Today, young women have more choices and control in their lives than ever before. They have the freedom to make maximum choices in education and least in career.
• The survey also revealed that most of the young women want to change their career and income, followed by personal development.
• The results also showed that more than 60% women identified themselves to bring about a change in their lives, followed by family, government, and friends.
• Another input given by empowered women revealed how 46% of them considered “self-awareness” as an important tool to bring this change in their lives.
The world is constantly changing. It is time to start a revolution and reform our strategies and actions. Girl education and its funding must be held the top priority. Now is the time to boldly challenge the conventional assumptions on what empowers girls and young women. Women must be made aware of their inner powers and rights. It is only after this change the next generation of empowered women leaders and change makers will transform our world.
Today’s Young Women Are Leading Change As per 4GGL’s global survey, violence against girls and women is the single most important issue to millennial women. It is the greatest moral tragedy of our time and we must take action now to end it. Young women, across the globe, are working towards bringing a positive change in the society. They are leading the change.
All the nations must collectively and proactively work towards what Barack Obama, 44th US President, quoted, “When women succeed, nations are more safe, secure and prosperous.”
