CHEWTON GLEN HOTEL & SPA
GLAMOROUS FOREST TREEHOUSES
I
n search of something a little bit different to feature in our Spring eco- luxury issue of Surrey Magazine, we decided to visit one of the original Relais & Chateaux country house hotels, Chewton Glen and experience an unforgettable getaway in one of their five- star forest treehouses like you’ve never seen before! Hotels really don’t come more luxurious than Chewton Glen set within 130 acres of Hampshire countryside on the edge of the New Forest National Park just a few minutes from the sea. As one of the Iconic Luxury Hotels collection, it offers all things to all people. From 72 unique bedrooms including 14 one-of-a-kind treehouses
to an award-winning spa,
Europe’s largest hydrotherapy pool, tennis centre and 9-hole golf course. On top of that the latest addition is an exciting purpose-built space that sets the stage for enjoying and learning about food and cooking. It is an open-plan dining room called “The Kitchen” – offering relaxed dining and a chance to see the chefs at work in a state-of-the-art Cookery School overseen by celebrated chef James Martin, offering bespoke experiences and seasonal classes.
Combining a childhood fantasy of a treetop hideaway with luxury and comfort,
Chewton Glen’s Treehouse Suites provide the ultimate escape for grown-ups. The Yews is their latest and largest Treehouse Suite, sleeping up to eight adults, plus four children, making it ideal for a get- together for families and friends. Full of surprises and indulgences, this is a Treehouse
for extreme cosseting. The
central living area, with deep sofas and wood burning stove, has picture windows opening onto a completely private, wrap- around decked terrace suspended 35ft above the ground among the treetops and enjoying tranquil forest views. With day beds, dining table and chairs and two hot tubs among the leafy canopy, it is the perfect place to eat and drink, unwind and day dream. The interior complements the setting; warm greys and rich greens and teals, comforting throws and organic pod- style lamp bases reinforce the sense of tranquillity and wellbeing. The Treehouse is both sumptuous and spacious.
They are idyllic for those seeking calm to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and feeling a million miles away from their busy lives. Named after different trees, our treehouse loft suite “Willow” had a cosy circular shaped living apartment nestled in the foliage of the trees, with private terrace and a hot tub with mood changing lighting, marble bathroom and magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular panoramic views of the wooded valley that simply took our breath away! They have thought of everything you could desire and filled the tree houses with carefully planned, unpretentious luxury touches to create a ‘home from home’ and enable total relaxation, indulgence, comfort and rejuvenation. Delicious welcome delights awaited us upon arrival
The service is discreet and flawless. Staff ensured we didn’t have to lift a finger from check-in to departure. Our stay was seamless with chauffeur driven electric buggies to get us around the estate. There is a treehouse Room Service menu but the hotel restaurant “The Dining Room” boasts utterly delicious fine dining by Head Chef Simon Addison and Executive Head Chef, Luke Matthews. We enjoyed the best Chateaubriand from the Grill accompanied by 3 sauces, triple cooked homemade chips and crispy kale from their own kitchen garden across the courtyard. For dessert, we chose Iced Chewton Glen Honeycomb Parfait! Say no more. Head to the Spa to lounge and be indulged for some special ‘me’ time. The indoor pool is simply out of this world with crystal clear water and stunning Grecian columns. We experienced a hot stone massage and Diamond Oskia facial from their luxury branded beauty treatments. One could easily spend all day there!
After a blissful night’s sleep, we lie in our king-sized bed watching the sun rise and wildlife hopping in the treetops. Listening to the birds perched on branches singing and the hot tub bubbling outside. It has to be one of the most eccentric and quirkiest travel experiences I have encountered! The final show stopper was the early arrival of our ‘much more than’ a continental breakfast straight from the chef in a ‘cool box’ hamper full of delicious goodies which arrived through a concealed hatch in the wall! Fresh pastries, homemade baguette, organic jams and honey, cold meats and cheeses, fresh fruits, cereals and juices, yoghurts, milk and a newspaper of our choice. You can do as little or as much as you like. We had the perfect finish to our staycation with a short walk to the beach to watch the waves.
