Nature’s keepers at The Wisley Celebrating the passion that produces the UK’s best-conditioned golf course
Picture the beautiful English countryside: Mankind and modern technology working in perfect harmony, along with help from swarms of bees!
The bees are an essential partner to The Wisley’s golf course Greenkeeper. His role at The Wisley is certainly not the same as pio- neered by Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews in the 1800s. The cloth capped bearded gent pushing a lawn mower is far removed from the reality of the modern course superintendent. The new breed of Greenkeeper works from his hi-tech computer controlled compound where everything from irrigation, to soil moisture levels are controlled by the latest chips from Intel. The Wisley is also involved in research pioneering ultraviolet technology for environmentally-friendly lawn treatment. This is turf management 21st century style.
The Wisely’s course management forms but one, albeit highly signifi- cant, part of the greenkeepers’ duties. Extending quite literally beyond the exquisitely maintained course, they focus their efforts equally on the
surrounding acres of wildflowers and unique flower displays to help boost pollinator species habitat. The beautiful River Wey and wetland areas, providing sanctuary for swans, also fall under the greenkeepers’ stewardship. Not to mention the bee yard (or Apiary), where the bee keeper produces the hugely popular Wisley honey – a very special treat for The Wisley members or a perfect gift for friends.
With this much attention provided to the environment, the golf course is cared for with just as much focus, and with a degree of attention rarely seen on a golf course anywhere in the world. The team of an astonishing 40 greenkeepers devotes 1,600 hours per week to provide the members with a course that is prepared to the most exacting standards. The greens, aprons, and tees enjoy 45 hours of hand mowing per day! The 139 bun- kers with the finest sand from Scotland are also raked daily. Boasting fairways like velvet carpets, and tees like many greens, even the rough is highly managed to challenge the golfer, while still being easy to find your ball.
The practice area is lavished with an equal amount of care and attention, along with the very latest in teaching and club fitting technology, such as Trackman and SAM PuttLab, that compliment a full suite of video and recording software. It is perhaps no surprise that dozens of the world’s best golfers have been members at The Wisley, including Ryder Cup players and Major champions.
It is this total dedication and uncompromising approach of The Wisley team that allows The Wisley members to enjoy the absolute pinnacle of course conditioning each and every day.
