Fen Farm Dairy, Bungay

JuST a minute from Bungay, along the Flixton Road, you will find Fen Farm. Even if you don’t know what it is called you will know the farm, it is instantly recognis- able thanks to the shed on the side of the road…….it’s painted with cow markings! Why is this farm so special?

We’re very pleased to support Jonny & Dulcie, wishing them continued success from printing.com Norwich

Jonny & Dulcie Crickmore look after a dairy herd with a difference. They produce and sell their own raw milk which has proved so popular they decided to diversify and start- ed to produce raw butter and beautiful cheeses, including the now famous Baron Bigod. Jonny grew up on Fen Farm

which has been in the family for many years, so it is fair to say he knows this farm and

business. Jonny and Dulcie clearly love what they do, every day is different and presents a different challenge. But, what never changes is the need to look after the herd. The cows know the routine and come rain or shine, they are pleased to see humans! It is a few years now since

Jonny and Dulcie decided to put the shed up and sell their raw milk direct to the public to see how it would go. In 2011 the shed went up with 50 litres available. Not only did the 50 litres go quickly, people were writing lovely comments about the quality of the milk and the fact they will be back to buy more. Needless to say, the experiment was a success so they decided to this was a

route to explore further. So, what makes such deli-

cious milk? Jonny explains that the herd of Montbeliarde are free to graze the beautiful marshes along the Waveney Valley. This breed of cow is specially selected and renowned for producing the finest raw product. It is not about lots and lots of milk, it is about getting the very best milk. Intensive farming has its place, but for the Crick- mores it is all about quality over quantity and that, sur- prisingly, starts with the soil. Jonny explains that before

you do anything you need good soil; good soil with lots of earth worms leads to good grass. Well the soil here is per- fect and so the grass is deli-

cious – well to a cow anyway! The cows graze the meadows in spring, summer and autumn and in winter when the grass doesn’t grow, or they are under water, the cows are in, what they would consider, luxury deep straw barns. You see, Jonny and Dulcie under- stand that happy healthy cows that lead stress free lives will produce the best milk. So, ani- mal welfare is at the heart of everything Fen Farm Dairy do.

Once the cows have done

their bit and produced deli- cious thick, creamy milk, they are back to their life of luxury in the meadow or barn. This is now where Jonny and Dulcie work their magic. Much of the milk stays as this raw product. The rest is churned to become stunning raw butter (Jonny recently held a butter tasting at Selfridges), or the award- winning Baron Bigod cheese. As word spread demand increased and so Fen Farm are now building a brand-new cheese processing plant. You will find Fen Farm

products in local pubs, cafes, farm shops and delis. Those who venture to the bright lights of London will also find them in Harrods and Selfridg- es, and they are also now used at Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and Silverstone. There really is high demand for this quali- ty, artisan product. It is lovely to see this family

run farm not only thriving but doing so whilst not compro- mising the quality of what they produce. They do so by putting their animals first and making sure they have all that they need to be healthy and happy. The enthusiasm and passion that Jonny and Dulcie have for their business is sure to see Fen Farm Dairy prod- ucts are here to stay.
