BECCLES and District Lions Club are seeking nominations for the 2018 Ivan Holmes Com- munity Award. Each year Bec- cles Lions Club asks for nomina- tions from the local community to award the Ivan Holmes Com- munity Award in memory of Lion Ivan Holmes MJF. Ivan was a stalwart member of
the club for 35 years. A past President and a Melvin Jones Fellowship recipient, Ivan was also a key figure within the Bec- cles Community and with that in mind, the club presents this annual award. It is given to com- memorate his good work, accomplished over 35 years, serving the Beccles Lions Club within the local community. It is seen as a reflection of how Ivan was constantly dedicating his life to serve others and act as an inspirational and motivational legacy, to continue Ivan’s good work within the local commu- nity. The award is presented to a
nominated individual or organi- sation known to have given extra special help to someone or a group of people, or indeed an organisation within the local community during the last 12 months. The award will be pre- sented at the Beccles Lions Annual Charter Dinner. Your local Lions Club are ask-
ing you to nominate an individu- al or organisation, or group of people who you believe deserve this prestigious award. Please contact Lion Chris Eglington, Beccles and District Lions Club, Tel: 01502 531044 or email: cd_eglington@btopenworld. com for a nomination form. History of Beccles Public Hall Documented by Local Group
MuCH to the delight and grat- itude of the Beccles Public Hall directors, four members of Beccles u3A have com- piled a book of the building’s rich and ever-changing histo- ry, from its beginnings in 1785 right up to the present day. Barry Darch, convenor of
the research group comprising Lynda Ayres, Rosemary Hewlett and Alan Townsend and himself, said “Although the Hall was
built to bring people of inde- pendent means to Beccles and first functioned as an assem- bly room for the better-off and as a theatre, it came to serve in the 1800s a huge variety of purposes, including as a school, town library and a
venue for a wide range of lec- tures, entertainments and edu- cational activities for all. This tradition has continued to today; and it is a great credit to the management and all the volunteers who support the Public Hall that it is still very much a multi-purpose build- ing that is an essential part of the town’s culture.” The research group drew on
a wide range of historical information, including the Rix Collection in Lowestoft Record Office and material in Beccles Museum, and benefit- ed from Beccles’ long tradi- tion of local historians, sever- al of whom generously shared material from their findings. Interviews were also conduct-
ed with local residents who recalled such aspects of the building’s history as its use as a British Restaurant in World War II and performances by some of the famous celebrities who have appeared in the venue. The limited edition of the
History of Beccles Public Hall, in A5 booklet form with over thirty pages and several colour photographs, is avail- able for £2 to purchase from the Public Hall Box Office, which is open from Monday – Saturday, 10am – 3pm. “Snap up your copy soon for
£2 (all profits to Hall funds),” said James Aggett, Hall Man- ager.
