RNLI - DART LIFEBOAT RNLI

In 2007 the RNLI re-established a lifeboat based in Dartmouth. The D class inflatable lifeboat, with an operations team of 43 and supported by a local Fundraising Branch and Management Group, has established a key role in the lifesaving activities on the river up to Totnes, in the harbour and along the coast in Start Bay. In the last two years 19% have been to incidents up

river, 36% in the harbour and, of the 45% in Start Bay, most are to vessels with engine failure. 32% of the 75 calls were aſter dark. In the last 10 years 11 lives have been saved. Two of those were yachtsmen in Dartmouth Harbour transferring to their boats at night and neither were wearing a lifejacket. This year two more were rescued in similar circumstances in daylight. The RNLI plan to establish storage lockers for life

jackets on shore this year so that they can be worn afloat and not have to be carried around town. Every April there is a free clinic for lifejackets to be checked at the lifeboat station on Coronation Park. Details can be found on the local station website. www.dartlifeboat.org.uk

The station is unmanned. Contact for non-emergency matters can be made using the website which has the contact details of the team, including Mark Strudwick, Lifeboat Operations Manager, the Fundraising Branch and John Yunnie, the Community Lifesaving Officer. There is currently a vacancy for a Deputy Launch

volunteer to join the Operations team. The volunteer should be under 70 and know the local waters. The DLV receives the initial call from the Coastguard and then goes to the lifeboat station to monitor the crew until their safe return. In the case of an emergency please phone 999

to contact the Coastguard who will mobilise the appropriate rescue services.
