WHITFORD/EMEC COLLABORATION – LIVE TEST SITE

EMEC, a global leading test site within the marine renewable energy sector, provides grid-connected test sites for developers of marine energy converters – machines that generate electricity by harnessing the power of wave & tidal streams.

Situated in Orkney, with some of the harshest wave & tidal conditions in the world, EMEC provides the perfect location in which to test the

performance of coatings in dynamic and volatile environments.

LONG-TERM TEST SITE

The ongoing long-term test site, based in Stromness Harbour involves panels and bolts being attached to the side of the pier – visible when there is a low tide. A coatings test programme, the live site is established to analyse existing and developmental coating products under harsh environments, perfectly depicting the environment in which the coatings will be used in service – in this instance the splash zone.

SPLASH ZONE CONDITIONS The pier provides a good representation of a splash zone: part of a structure that is intermittently exposed to air and immersed in the sea; subject to a range of wet and dry conditions as the test pieces are submerged and covered in line with the tidal ebb and flood.

The pier provides an accessible location which can be easily reached and regularly monitored. This offers a standardised method in which to assess the performance of the coating. As the surface and coating conditions remain

GLOBAL REACH Whitford offers solutions to coating problems through technical expertise and local sales support and operates in every major market in the world, selling products in more than 100 countries. Their European headquarters based in Runcorn, UK, represents an industrial centre of excellence in the development of high-performance protective coatings operating to ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949 & ISO/TS 14001 Environmental Standards.

INVESTMENT

The company invests heavily in R&D, focusing on new and existing product development from initial innovation through to manufacture, taking the products through a complete Regulatory-compliant QC test system; products adhere to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) and other worldwide regulatory compliance.
