Hannah Venne (rt) was recognized as

Contributed by Laura Cannon Western Bloodstock’s 2-year-old sale ses-

sion December 5 at the 2017 NCHA Futurity went well, with figures topping the 2016 sale. The average was $26,830, well above last year’s $24,181. Filly CR Tuff Tizzy, consigned by Hunter Meinzer of Weatherford, went for $350,000 from Bobby Patton of Rocking P. Ranch. Royce Stallcup’s stallion Badboonaris- ing was second-high seller at $150,000, and went home with Buster Quirk of Plantation Farms in Denham Spring, LA.

Center Ranch, Centerville, was the victor

in an important tax case in late December. A federal judge de- clared that the ranch was indeed a for-profit business in spite of monetary losses, and Forbes magazine called that outcome a “stunning victory”. The IRS had contended that the ranch had tax deficiencies, due to misapplied exemptions, but the judge ruled in the ranch’s favor. Owned by Finis Welch, the 8,700-acre ranch is home of $2-million sire Woody Be Tuff.
