James Graham was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, on 21 September 1892, and attested for the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg on 4 December 1916. He served during the Great War with the 28th Battalion (Saskatchewan Regiment), Canadian Infantry on the Western Front from May 1918, and was severely wounded at Amiens on 9 August 1918 by both shrapnel and a high explosive shell. His right leg was amputated above the knee; his left leg was amputated below the knee, and his right arm was fractured. Fitted with artificial limbs, he returned to Canada and was discharged as medically unfit on 30 April 1920. He died at Qualicum Beach, British Colombia, on 12 March 1955.


Sold together with a full medical report detailing the recipient’s injuries.


Richard Finlayson was born in Edinburgh on 3 March 1890, and attested for the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg on 29 April 1915, having previously served for two years in the Royal Scots. He served during the Great War with the 28th Battalion (Saskatchewan Regiment), Canadian Infantry on the Western Front from 18 September 1915, and was killed in action on 6 June 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Dorothy Stickland resided at Cattistock Rectory, Dorchester. She volunteered at the Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital, Weymouth, 1915-1917, before engaging as a Storekeeper with V.A.D. in January 1918. Her service included in the J. C. Hospital, Salonika, 16 January 1918 - 8 May 1919. In later life she wrote a monograph on the author Thomas Hardy’s visit to Cattistock.

Miss Helen Dick Bonnar, later Mrs. Johnson-Smith, enrolled into the British Red Cross Society in November 1914, in the Midlothian detachment, and saw service at the Sick Children’s Hospital, the Gullam Red Cross Hospital, and the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Edinburgh before embarking for France where she served in the 8th Stationary Hospital between 28 Marrch 1917 and 12 March 1919. Awarded two scarlet efficiency stripes on 17 February 1919, she was ‘Mentioned’ in Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatch of 16 March 1919.

Gilbert Arthur Holdaway was employed as the General Manager of the Daily Gazette Press in Karachi. He was also Senior Grand Deacon in the Grand Lodge of All Scottish Freemasonry in India. During the Great War he served as Company Sergeant-Major in No.4 E.E. Company, Indian Defence Force. Serving in the Volunteers, he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, as a Sergeant in the Karachi Auxiliary Force, published in I.A.O. 556 of August 1929. In 1938 he was awarded the Efficiency Medal (India), as a Sergeant in No. 2 (Karachi) Company, Machine Gun Corps, listed in I.A.O. 536 of June 1938.
