Pupils championways tomake others happy

ACTS of random kindness may appear to have been trampled un- derfoot in our fast-paced world, but pupils at one school are doing their bit to make sure Headcorn – at least – is a happier place to be. Youngsters at the primary school

are banishingmisery as champions of a 15-Minute Revolution. The school-basedproject encourages

thewholeschoolcommunitytogive15 minutes at least once a week to do somethingunexpectedtohelp, support or cheerupsomeone. And it’s an initiative that has be-

come hugely popular, with activi- ties including visits to care homes, litter picks, and pupils reciting po- etry to neighbours on their doorsteps to brighten their day. Head teacher Sarah Symonds ex-

plained: “It began as a challenge to try to give at least 15 minutes a week to support, befriend, encour- age and thank someone. “Our hope was that if we went

about our lives being more pur- posefully observant of howwe can make others’ lives better by being kind, thenwe could begin to really transformour own environment.

Headcorn Primary School Year 6 pupils, who ran a performing arts concert, raised £100 for residents at Yew Tree House in Station Road

“The pupils have been really ex-

cited about sharing their acts of kindness to encourage each other with new ways they can make an impact on their home, school and wider community.” Activities have also seen pupils

take cakes and cookies to stores and businesses in the village to thank staff for being a part of the community and writing cards to neighbours to thank themfor their patience during the extensive

buildingwork at the school. Mrs Symonds said: “We really

want to build stronger and closer relationships with our community and this is a very practical way to demonstrate to children the re- wards of being kind.” Anyone interested in partnering

the initiative orwith ideas of things to do or people to support is in- vited to contact the school via admin@headcorn.kent.sch.uk or on 01622 891289.
