Three killed on notorious road

ACALL has beenmade for full in- vestigation into a notorious stretch of road after three more deaths in December. TheA229 throughLintonis a com-

mon spot for accidents, and the fa- talities in December have added weight to concerns about safety. A22-year-oldmanwas killed in a

crashwith another car onDecember 4,while late onNewYear’s Eve two men in their 30s died when their Mercedes hit a tree. Both took place near to the Stile-

bridge Lane junction. CllrDavidBurton,who represents

Marden and Yalding on Maidstone Borough Council, says now is the time for a proper look at the issues on the stretch of road. “The whole stretch from the bot-

tom of Linton Hill up past Stile- bridge Lane is a concern,” he said. “I drive down that stretch of road

most days and I see cars driving quickly down there – although it’s more a case of 50mph rather than 70. “I think it’s down to more than

just speedthough andthat’swhywe need a full investigation. It could be down to the road surface because in

a number of the accidents I hear about cars seemto slide off the road into the hedges or trees.” The 22-year-old was driving a

Ford Fiesta when it collided with a redCitroenC4 at around 9.15pmon Monday December 4. The Citroen driver sufferedminor injuries. The second tragedy occurred at

10.40pmonNewYear’s Evewhen a blueMercedes left the roadandhit a tree. The driver, a 36-year-old, and his passenger, who was 37 – who were both fromEast Sussex –diedat the scene. Cllr Burton added: “Many people

who Iworkwith have been directly or indirectly affected by crashes on that road. “Kent Highways always look at

the number of incidents before de- termining their priorities of which roads to look at. Surely now there have been enough incidents along theA229 for that to be a priority.” Kent Police are appealing for any

witnesses to either of the crashes or who saw the vehicles involved be- fore themto contact thewitness ap- peal line on 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk.

Bunnies hop to pramwin

SEVERAL hundred spectators braved the wet conditions to cheer on com- petitors in the annual Sutton Valence pramrace on New Year’s Day. The 38th running of the event raised funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sus-

sex Air Ambulance. The race was preceded by a small, private ceremony to mark the first

anniversary of the tragic death of Francis ‘Titch’O’Sullivan, who died dur- ing last year’s race. For 2018, the rules had been strengthened and with amodified course

and a large teamof trained volunteermarshals, the event ran smoothly. There were a wide array of costumes on show, including a Donald

Trump, two North Korean dictators and a trio of Smurfs. But the winners were the Playboy team (pictured) as Josh Davies and

Fred McVarish dressed as Bunny Girls and James Padwick paid tribute to Hugh Hefner in his trademark silk gown and sailor cap. The race is organised by the Queens Head Oddfellows, who raise funds

for good causes within the Three Suttons and a spokesman said: “We would like to thank all of thosewhomade the running of this year’s event possible, and all of those who participated and attended.”
