PLANS for a caravan to be placed on a spot of land inUlcombewere approved by Maidstone Borough Council by the narrowest of mar- gins. Rhiannon Gilham, who comes
from a travelling family, had been living in a house in South Park Road in Maidstone for four years until the end of October. Her application for a new cara-
van on a site at Pye Corner in Ul- combe was deferred by MBC’s planning committee when it was heard in mid-October as its mem- bers sought amendments to the lo- cation of the unit. It was heard again on Tuesday
December 19, and needed the chairman’s vote to win approval after a lengthy debate. That came despite opposition
from local residents, the parish council and Cllr Shellina Prender- gast, who sits on the committee. “I knowthis site reallywell,”Cllr
Prendergast said. “The site can be seen fromthe hillside, and is part of a long-distance view. “It is a landscape of local value,
and I don’t think this can be miti- gated.” Objectors from the public
pointed to the high number of homes for gypsies and travellers in the surrounding area – there are al-
Truebeamarrives at hospital
CANCER patientswill be treatedwith greater accuracy thanks to a new smart radiotherapy machine at Maidstone Hospital. State-of-the-art Truebeam tech-
nology allows new equipment at the Kent Oncology Centre to track and target cancers as a patient breathes. The £2million machine, which
makes 10,000 calculations a second, will improve treatment for thosewith relatively mobile cancers such as in
the lung and breast. Henry Taylor, the hospital’s clinical
director for cancer and haematology, explained that many tumors in places like the lungs, brain, breast, prostate, head and neck move when you breathe in and out. He added: “This is a very positive
enhancement to the cancer services we offer and I am delighted to see the equipment in place and ready for our patients.”

ready 67 in the village, and a large proportion of pupils attending Ul- combe Primary School are from traveller families. But, speaking for the applicant,
her husband Luke told the commit- tee: “We have had to move out of our house and are currently home- less. We’re staying in a trailer onUl- combe site andwould love to get in there, but plots don’t come up there. “Rhiannon wants our daughters
to have the education they deserve, while she can continue her traveller lifestyle in the school holidays. “I urge you to vote on the facts, rather than opinions.”
Cllr Prendergast tabled amotion
that the plans be rejected on grounds of harm on the character and effect on the countryside, whichwas tied at four votes apiece, but Cllr Martin Cox, who was voted in as stand-in chairmanmid- way through the meeting when Cllr Clive English had to leave, re- tained his vote to reject themotion as his casting vote. A motion was then tabled to ap-
prove the plans with a number of conditions as laid out by planners, and again the vote was tied, with Cllr Cox again retaining his vote – this time in favour – meaning that the planswere approved.
