Problem: Difficult to find. The geographic size of North America is a well-known barrier
to connecting breeders and buyers within our borders. However, the even larger issue is identifying (a) what prospects are avail- able within our borders and (b) where they are located. In this technologically advanced society we live in, it seems absurd that there is so much difficulty in positively identifying, tracking and locating prospects within North America. Solution: North American breeders, identification begins
with you. Breed responsibly, properly register your horses with a reputable breed organization and microchip. If the breed regis- try does not lifetime register the horse with USEF or Equestrian Canada, make sure you properly record it. This will help ensure that the horse’s true identity is traceable throughout its life, across breed, sport and geographical boundaries. Buyers, keep the registration papers or passport. Record transfers of owner- ship with all organizations where the horse is registered—breed and sport. Making sure a horse’s ownership and identity are properly recorded in every stage of life is vital to supporting new tech solutions coming to the market that could give better visibility for North American-bred horses. Imagine having the ability to know a horse’s whole life story in sport and breeding across disciplines, breed organizations and countries in a single view. In addition, breeders could enter their farm information and allow their location to be geomapped in relation to other breeding farms to entice buyers to those areas.
These solutions are no longer pipe dreams. They are be-
coming reality as we speak. In May of 2017, the first phase of the world’s first international horse identification platform— Equicore Online—was launched. Through this platform and many other technical solutions currently in development, geographical boundaries to finding young horse prospects in North America will be dissolved. But the truth is, the power to drive the success of all of these positive solutions—and ulti- mately the success of North American breeding—really lies in your hands. Register and microchip your horses. Record owner- ship transactions. Fuel the industry with clean data and watch it work for you.
