Ones to Watch at the WEG By Jennifer M. Keeler
When the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) return to North America this fall from September 10-23, the eyes of the horse world will be turned towards beautiful Tryon, North Carolina. And with KWPN horses being the choice of champions from around the globe, there’s no doubt that Dutch sport horses will once again top the podiums. Here are a few of our favorite combinations who might be seen in action at this year’s WEG:
DRESSAGE
America’s darlings Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades (2002 bay KWPN gelding, Florett AS x Liwilarda by Goya, bred in Te Netherlands by P. Crum) have been rising stars for Team USA for the last few years. Now ranked #3 in the world, they will lead the U.S. contingent to Tryon and be favorites for another medal.
Also in the hunt: international championship veterans and multiple medal-winning combinations Carl Hester (GBR) and Nip Tuck (2004 bay KWPN gelding, Don Ruto x Irena by Animo), and Edward Gal (NED) with Glock’s Voice (2002 black KWPN stallion, De Niro x Rohbria by Rohdiamant).
JUMPING
Kent Farrington (USA) is currently the #1-ranked rider in the world, and helping him get to the top have been his trusted mounts Creedance (2007 chestnut KWPN gelding, Lord Z x Camantha by Notaris, bred in Te Netherlands by A. Hassing) and Voyeur (2002 bay KWPN gelding, Tolano Van’t Riethof x Loma by Goodwill, bred in Te Netherlands by G.C.J. Van Kooten). Right on Farrington’s heels is U.S. team mate McLain
Ward (USA), currently ranked #2 in the world. Among Ward’s talented roster is HH Gigi’s Girl (2008 grey KWPN mare, Vingino x Zaline by Celano, bred in Te Netherlands by T. De Boer). Beezie Madden (USA) has been a mainstay of Team USA for almost two decades, and she once again has two talented KWPN mounts being pointed towards this year’s WEG Selection Trials: Darry Lou (2008 chestnut KWPN Erkend stallion, Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Venus by Nabab de Reve, bred in Te Netherlands by Roelof Bril), as well as Breitling LS (2006 dark bay KWPN Approved stallion, Quintero ASK x Armonia La Silla by Accord II, bred in Mexico by La Silla, Monterrey). Contenders for Team Canada may be the Spruce Meadows 5*-winning combination of Tiffany Foster (CAN) and Brigh- ton (2006 dark bay KWPN gelding, Contendro II x Van Ed by Quick Star, bred in Te Netherlands by E. Santing).
Laura Graves and Verdades. Megan Lane (CAN) and her North American-bred mare
Caravella (2001 bay KWPN-NA mare, Contango x P. Riv- iera by Riverman, bred in Canada by Jill Irving) have risen together from the FEI Junior ranks to the Olympic Games, and will look to qualify for their second WEG together. Young rising star Sönke Rothenberger (GER) and his
jumping-bred Cosmo 59 (2007 bay KWPN gelding, Van Gogh x Lady by Fruhling/Landjonker, bred in Te Neth- erlands by S. Serrarens) have already proved their worth as part of the German gold medal-winning team at the Rio Olympics, and will look to be back for more honors in Tryon.
