German students witness 3D Innovation at Panalpina

For the second year running, Panalpina World Transport kindly hosted a group of logistics students from HLA – Die Flensburger Wirtschaftsschule, a vocational college in northern Germany, who were given a fascinating insight into the company and a vision of an innovative future. The students, who all work for logistics companies,

received a behind-the-scenes tour of Panalpina’s UK/Ireland regional headquarters at London Heathrow. Chris Cooper, managing director UK and Ireland

kicked-off the day with an overview of the organisation and then gave an interesting insight into his career and why logistics is such a great sector to work in. Steve de Croos, country head of logistics UK/IE, then

really enhanced the student’s knowledge by explaining the challenges and issues of the supply-chain, its management and the logistics that support it. In addition, they saw a potential vision of how 3D

printing may be able to complement the supply-chain in the future, by printing products locally rather than shipping them, for example, from Asia. Whilst 3D printing is still in its early stages, experience tells us that printers will become faster, more affordable, and the quality of the products produced will increase. Some fun was had with a 3D printed replica – showing the quality – of the FIFA World Cup, which the German students enjoyed. Katie Herdman, country head of human resources UK

Although the UK is leaving the European Union, we are still members of the EU forwarders association, CLECAT, until March 2019. At the recent Freight

& Ireland, concluded the day with a talk about careers and how we need to attract more young people to the industry. She emphasised that there are many opportunities within the sector, and that those that grab them with both hands will do really well and go far. Kirsten Lund, logistics teacher, HLA – Die

Flensburger Wirtschaftsschule, said: “Thank you so much to BIFA for arranging the visit to Panalpina for us. The students really enjoyed it and learnt so much, and it will really help with their wider knowledge of the industry. To have so many of Panalpina’s senior management give up their valuable time to spend with us is really appreciated.”

Forwarders Forum, BIFA Director Steve Parker should have finished his two-year term as CLECAT President. However, the CLECAT Board have asked Steve to stay on as President despite the UK leaving soon. It is the same with the Road Institute where BIFA Director Mark Bromley continues as Chair, and on the Air Institute Mike Jones from BIFA is the Chair. Despite the media headlines about our relationship with the EU we have found our forwarder colleagues to be pragmatic and very helpful in their friendly attitude to the UK, borne out by our continued influence at CLECAT. The forum topic this year was

Multimodal Transport and an impressive array of speakers debated the enhancements to the sector, as well as the barriers that need to be tackled. After lunch, attention turned to

e-commerce, the disruptors and how traditional freight forwarders need to respond to innovations in the market. The session gave examples on how digital innovation will revolutionise the value proposition of freight forwarding in the future.
