Training
BIFAlink We of course wish Colin well, but will still see
him as he will carry on as our internal verifier for the BTEC work. However, Colin has joked that he will not miss some of the far flung places we have sent him to for in-house training.
Future planning As a proactive move – knowing Colin was going to retire one day – Carl Hobbis joined BIFA in February 2016 as training development manager and has worked closely with Colin over the past months. The BIFA team was further enhanced by the

Colin Joyce retires
There has been a changing of the guard in the BIFA training department with the successors of stalwart Colin Joyce planning how best to meet future training needs
Over the past 30 years BIFA has trained thousands of freight forwarders on a variety of subjects. However anyone who has taken one of our skills improvement courses will have benefited from the knowledge and experience of Colin Joyce, who retired at the end of 2017. Colin has had two distinct forwarding careers
and by the mid-1980s was a Director of that famous forwarding name Thomas Meadows. In the ensuing merger of ownership into the ill-fated
Rockwood, he changed course and started Stansted Training Services providing skills enhancement tuition to forwarders and shippers.

employment of Graeme Wilkinson during 2017, and together Carl and Graeme will continue to deliver forwarding and Customs courses to the BIFA membership and wider logistics community throughout the UK. Carl stated: “Colin’s all-round industry
knowledge is incredible. Despite having worked in forwarding for over 30 years myself, I have learnt a lot from him since I have been at BIFA. “I also see every one of our delegate
evaluation forms and it is clear that not only do students learn a lot from Colin, but they love being in his company and his personal stories bring the sessions to life, cementing the learning. “In life though, the only constant is change, and
the need for training will only get greater. This gives us an opportunity to review our courses and make some changes where necessary. “We also have the availability of the
International Freight Forwarding apprenticeship on the horizon, so we will be working with Colin on tweaking our two BTEC courses to fit alongside this. In the spring, we will also be introducing a number of ‘behind the scenes’ tours for apprentices and are reviewing how we attract young people to work in this industry – all part of our wider training review. He concluded: “I have really enjoyed working
with Colin; he has been part of the BIFA team for so long now and has been so supportive – and still is – he certainly deserves to enjoy his retirement and not worry about customs procedures too much.”
