Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Executive Director’s Message

Chamber Patrons

Welcome to the Sheffield City Region Chamber 2018 Directory. Following on from the announcement last year of the new membership offer we are delighted to report its success and excellent feedback from members, who are now seeing the benefits of the new structure. It moves away from membership depending on how many people an organisation

employs to one which depends on the level of service a member requires. It is now a service offer which puts the needs of the customer at the heart of everything we offer and reflects the reality of every operating business. Their first question should be ‘Who is our customer and what do they want?’ We hope you will continue to support us as we move forward. On a representative basis the Chamber has taken strong positions on transport

(especially HS2), regeneration and construction, Brexit and devolution. We believe we represent the business voice and campaign hard for it. We utilise the British and International Chambers of Commerce to support this and believe we are as well placed to get your views across as we have been for many years. Our Chamber Forums are vibrant, active and focused and really do a job for you and

the local economy. The Chamber continues to play a leading role in strategically important projects like flood defences, skills and education, infrastructure, and health & wellbeing. We believe we have played a part in the current momentum I think we all feel around the city.

Sheffield has had some major successes in 2017 and has achieved significant drive in

its economy. Despite the uncertainty of Brexit businesses in the region have put that to one side and focused on everyday business.

Major investments in the region by McLaren, Boeing, British Land, Peel, New Era Development (Chinese) have helped increase private sector employment which has more than offset losses over several years in the public sector. Significant investment amongst our education establishments have resulted in two,

very successful, UTC's, an FE College which is winning major national apprenticeship contracts, and two universities who have shown major business sector commitments through the investment in both the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Advanced Wellness Research Centre (AWRC). Our pipeline of potential investors remains strong and the region aspires to be best in

class in advanced manufacturing and materials, health and wellness, logistics and creative and digital design.

Much energy is spent in the region promoting and growing international trade across the world.

Our Patrons have a long-standing relationship with the Chamber, and have created an important, strategic partnership with leading businesses from key sectors across the city region.

Independent of Brexit our analysis is that this is more likely to be the Asian Century. Getting the right deal with Europe is important but by 2050 we will be much more focused on doing trade in areas like China, Indonesia and South-East Asia. We have made a good start and in 2017 the city region hosted the annual Horasis Conference where major Asian investors visited the city for a conference. We hope and expect, that to cement our links to private sector investment in the future.
