Doncaster Chamber Chief Executive’s Message

Chamber Patrons

The last decade has seen a dramatic transformation of Doncaster’s economy. In many cases this is exemplified by a changed landscape and the advent of projects such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Frenchgate, iPort and many more besides.

It is also possible to see the positive change within the data and statistics; employment is at a 12-year high and Doncaster repeatedly features in top ten lists for good economic growth. Crucially, Doncaster has changed from being a place that defines itself by need and challenge to instead characterising itself on opportunity and the value it can add to UK plc. This change has not taken place overnight. Many interventions have been put in place and, indeed, yet more mountains must be moved if Doncaster’s growth is to be fully connected to the borough’s residents and SMEs. This is why Doncaster’s relentless focus on skills and education is so important.

‘Improving Doncaster’s education and skills system will play a major part in improving Doncaster’s economic resilience’

The last couple of years have seen a

heartening improvement in schools’ results and Autumn 2017 saw the opening of the National College for High Speed Rail. This world class facility will place Doncaster at the vanguard of the Government’s technical skills revolution and ensure that both the region’s and country’s rail engineering businesses have the skills they need to deliver HS2 and other global projects.

In addition to this, the merger between Doncaster College and North Lindsey College has been well received by local businesses and will enable the institution to better meet the needs of the borough’s private sector.

Doncaster Chamber has played an active role in supporting this positive change and

has led the charge on two critical projects. Firstly, your Chamber has led the bid to bring a University Technical College to Doncaster – a key project that will support young people into STEM based careers. Secondly, the Chamber’s Doncaster Skills Academy has continued to partner with local schools to deliver ‘bridging the gaps’ activities. Over the past three years the team has supported over 17,000 young people to raise aspirations, improve work readiness and develop commercial skills which is positively impacting on Doncaster’s future growth prospects.

Improving Doncaster’s education and skills system will play a major part in improving Doncaster’s economic resilience. However, skills is not the only issue of concern to local firms and increasingly the Chamber has upped the ante when it comes to championing other issues that contribute to a successful place. This has included lobbying for improvements to Doncaster’s town centre and also championing the arts and cultural sectors that make the area an attractive place to live for skilled workers and a positive contribution to the economy.

I have high hopes for Doncaster, its businesses and residents in 2018. There is now significant momentum building in the borough and opportunities are abound for local businesses to capitalise on. At the Chamber we look forward to helping connect firms to those opportunities and helping them with their own individual growth journey.
