Chief Executive’s Message Strategic Partners
What an extraordinary year 2016/17 was - 12 months of quite dramatic change. By far the biggest event of the year, and the one expected to have the biggest impact on business, came in June 2016, when the country voted to leave the EU. Business, like the electorate, was split on whether leaving or staying was best, but the Chamber remained strictly neutral in the debate. Despite some extremely negative predictions, the end of 2016 saw the UK with the strongest economy of all G8 nations and business enjoying something of a boom on the back of a devalued pound, which made exports cheaper. This led to rising confidence resulting in recruitment (driving regional unemployment figures to among the lowest in the country) and investment in plant and premises - the latter being something in which the Chamber led by example when it invested in a new office in Chesterfield at the end of February to

provide a fit for purpose facility for members, customers and staff. The Chamber also continued its investment in Leicester by relocating its city centre office to Friars Mill, in the riverside redevelopment area, coinciding with the Chamber taking on management of the historic site on behalf of Leicester City Council – all very positive for the Chamber and its members.
Also very positive, the Chamber was delighted that its services were recognised nationally when it won the British Chambers of Commerce Excellence in International Trade Award. It was just reward, particularly for the 17 members of staff who make up the Chamber’s international trade team, and recognition at the highest level of the portfolio of services we offer to members.
The Chamber once again celebrated the diverse and innovative range of businesses we have in its region though its annual Chamber Business Awards, which saw winners across multiple categories announced at three black-tie gala dinners across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. The quality of the Chamber members that entered the Business Awards was clear, with six winners going on to scoop regional business accolades from the British Chambers of Commerce. Once again, the Chamber’s Annual Dinner – one of the highlights of the region’s business calendar – was excellently received, as a record 600+ delegates heard former Head of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller, deliver a fascinating and insightful keynote on security and wider issues.
Looking to the future, the Chamber continues to deliver against five key facets that our members, which surpassed 4,000 for the first time in 2017, have identified to us as being of particular importance to them – Grow; Connect; Skills; Influence; International. While there remains plenty of hard work ahead, the East Midlands Chamber
(Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) continues to deliver against these core themes, all of which are, and will continue to be, enshrined in our overarching pledge to enhance East Midlands businesses.
