Rector ready to welcome flock

A RECTOR says he has been blown away by the generosity of the people of Snodland as he pre- pared to reopen the doors of a church in the town. All Saints Church was forced to

close its doors last December be- cause severe health and safety risks were discovered. But thanks to the fundraising ef-

forts of parishioners, friends of the church and a grant from the Her- itage Lottery Fund, the church is back open. Hugh Broadbent, the Rector of

Snodland, which takes in both All Saints and Christ Church in the Lower Birling parish, has been im- pressed by the way the town has come together. “There were certainly some peo-

ple aroundwho thoughtwewould never raise thematch funding,” he said. “Thatwas about £100,000 and theHLF gave us just over £200,000. “The community have pulled to-

gether and it shows howimportant this building is to them. One fam- ily on their own raised nearly £1,000. It really is heartwarming to have had all this support. “We’re hoping to develop the

church further, not only as a place ofworship but also for community activities, such as concerts and ex- hibitions andwe’re also developing an educational programme called The Journey of Life, where children can reflect upon their own journey regardless of background.” It is believed there was a church

on the site of All Saints Church, in Mill Street, as long ago as the eighth century, and it appeared in the Domesday Book. Even further back, it is believed the first Battle of Medway in 43ADtook place on the river close to where the church is, while Thomas Waghorn, a postal pioneer who developed a new route fromGreat Britain to India in the 19th century, is buried there. And Rector Broadbent cannot

wait to have his parishioners back where they belong. “It looks fan- tastic but this is only part one – there is other stuff thatwill need to be done going forward. The Friends of the Church will need around £3,000 a year so that they canmaintain the church.” All Saints news, see Town Talk

Carpet just kept on growing

AYLESFORD’s Remembrance Day celebrations had an extra special feel as the full 18 metres of Ton- bridge &Malling Borough Council’s knitted poppy carpet was unfurled. More than 100 people were at

the Royal British Legion Industries’ Garden of Honour in the village to pay their respects, including the leader of TMBC, Nicolas Heslop, who laid a wreath The poppy carpet of more than

10,000 knitted poppies was put to- gether over a number ofmonths by volunteers. It was first unveiled at Tonbridge

Castle on October 27 to mark the start of the Poppy Appeal. At first it measured 11.11 metres, with around 7,000 poppies, but a late flourish extended it tomore than 18 metres, with staff and volunteers from RBLI and residents on the Royal British Legion village in Ayles- ford and Kent Army Cadet Force working to bring it all together. The carpet was created to raise

awareness of the work of the Royal British Legion at the start of their annual Poppy Appeal in 2017. MrHeslop said: “Itwaswonderful

The carpet of remembrance fea- turesmore than 10.,000 poppies

to see somany people at the Ayles- ford RemembranceDay Service. The poppy is a symbol of both Remem- brance and hope and having the knitted poppy carpet on display at the servicewas a fitting andmoving tribute to thosewho gave their lives for our country.”
