downsmail.co.uk Latest building plans on hold

PLANS for the latest phase of de- velopment in Kings Hill have been put on hold after objections fromthe parish council. Works on the third phase of ex-

pansion were heard by Tonbridge &Malling BoroughCouncil’s plan- ning committee. In this stage, 132 homes will be

built, as well as a new communal garden square and parking, in the area closest to themainA228. The chairman of Kings Hill

Parish Council says there are real concerns about the highways issues around the development. Cllr Tony Petty said: “The parish council object to phase three on

many highway safety issues. There appears to be inadequate residen- tial and visitor car parking spaces for the size of the development. “This will inevitably lead to resi-

dents and visitors parking on the already narrow roads causing re- fuse trucks or emergency service vehicles the inability to access the road. “This is already an issue on phase

two where an ambulance was un- able to drive to an address due to inconsiderate parking.” A total of 11 letters of objection

were received by the council on the proposal, which has been approved before, but the latest hearing con-

cerned reservedmatters for the site, relating to the siting, design and ex- ternal appearance of the proposed buildings, the means of access, drainage and strategic landscaping. Part of the new development in-

cludes ‘shared surfaces’, an in- creasing feature of day-to-day life where vehicles and pedestrians share right of way. But Cllr Petty has concerns over that, with safety issues rearing their head elsewhere in Kings Hill. He added: “The parish council

has already received serious com- plaints about safety from existing residents currently living in a shared surface area on Kings Hill.

Charlie’s quest for dog business space

A DOG walker fromStaplehurst is on the look- out for a field inMaidstone to securely walk her ever-growing list of doggy clients. Charlie Voller (29) has been walking dogs

professionally since 2014, and Kent DogWalker now hasmore than 150 active clients. The former entertainer has built up the

business fromjust her walking a couple of dogs a day to now being a teamof 10. She said: “I started working as a temp but hated it, so left to walk some dogs.As it became

more popular,we took on a field in Snodland towalk the dogs and now walk 40 dogs a day there. “We are hoping to recreate the

same thing for the local community inMaidstone. The Snodland field servesmany local people and provides a community service to help with socialisation of dogs and giving themsomewhere they can be let off their lead safely.”

“More alarmingly, there have

been incidents where cars have driven on the shared surface and nearly knocked over people exiting their homes as there is no distin- guishing boundary when driving on it.” At the planning committeemeet-

ing, Cllr Mike Taylor echoed those concerns, and also had reservations about the suitability of a children’s play area on the site in an area which is passed by all trafficwhich moves through the estate. The application was put off until

Wednesday December 13 to allow for suitable alterations to be con- sidered.
