In this new regular feature we are going to find out about local or- ganisations and clubs in and around the Kingsbridge and Salcombe area. If you run, or are a member of a particular local group or organisation please do email us at The Post . We would love to hear about it and possibly feature it in our next issue.

THE ARTS SOCIETY KINGSBRIDGE (previously KEDFAS) Members of the local

Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies). Our local branch was known as KEDFAS. In line with the national change of name, we became The Arts Society Kingsbridge. The Society has always been

T

known for extremely high quality lectures and presentations from national and international experts. This is ensured by a rigorous national selection process and maintained by detailed feedback from local societies. The title of Fine Arts could

give the impression of subjects being limited to paintings and antique furniture. In fact, the lecturers interpret this freely and previously have included ‘The History of Golf’, ‘Social History as seen through Silver Table Wear’, ‘Turner and his time in Devon’, ‘Foreigners in London’ and many, many more. The change of title

to include all arts has meant the subjects can now be even more wide ranging. There are also visits to places of

interest in the South West, often not normally opened to the public. These days combine interesting places with an enjoyable and social day out.

You don’t need any previous knowledge of art or history, just an interest—so do join us at one of the meetings.

Whole day events are organised with lunch, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of subjects which are often of local historical interest. A Christmas lunch and talk is

normally held at the Thurlestone Hote, and this year it is on Monday 4th December. The talk is by Toby Faber on ‘90 years of Excellence in Cover Design’.

associations are also entitled to join other ‘study days’ organised by other areas, anywhere in the country and abroad, further broadening subjects and their appeal. Days currently being advertised include, Jewellery, Stained glass and St Catherine’s Monastery, to give you a flavour! Our local meetings are in

Kingsbridge Methodist Hall on the last Wednesday evening of the month at 7.30pm, repeated the following Thursday morning at 10.30am. Meetings take place from September to June. Visitors are always welcome for a suggested donation of £8. There is time to socialise over refreshments before each meeting. You don’t need any previous

knowledge of art or history, just an interest—so do join us at one of the meetings. For full details, including contacts, see the arts society website theartssocietykingsbridge.org.uk
