NAfME Collegiate Corner

We have had an exciting year and look for- ward to what our new collegiate board will put together in the upcoming year. Expanding to four positions on the Collegiate Representa- tive Board last year allowed for a productive year with many new accomplishments, so we decided to continue this delegation for 2017-18. Eliana Barwinski, of the University of Michi- gan, will be the new President. I will be the new President-Elect, which is a two-year position that becomes President in the second year. An- tonio Caballero, of the University of Michigan - Flint, will be the Social Media Chair, a one-year position that facilitates the Michigan NAfME Collegiate Facebook page and other social media experiments that we choose to imple- ment. Lastly, Scott Hankins, of the University of Michigan, will be the Membership Chair, a one-year position that handles recruitment and other membership-related tasks.

Our three sessions at the 2017 MMC were well-received and catered directly to the collegiate audience, exploring issues like the interview process, success in student teaching, and focusing on active music making in our teaching. In February 2017, we held a Colle- giate Conference at the University of Michigan, which featured presentations and discussions with K-12 and university music educators on topics such as general music lessons, advocacy, and jazz improvisation, as well as an oppor- tunity to see the Budapest Festival Orchestra perform at Hill Auditorium. Te conference was well attended with representation from several of our Michigan Collegiate Chapters. On March 14, 2017 we were proud to have four collegiate students present at Music Education Advocacy Day, where we spoke and developed relationships with state legislators in Lansing. Five students from Western Michigan Universi- ty and one student from Wayne State University attended the NAfME Hill Day in Washington, D.C. this past June.

Tis year, we plan to hold three more sessions (focusing on state tests for certification, advoca- cy for music education, and the administrative duties of music teachers) another collegiate reception at MMC, a leadership workshop for

collegiate members, and more. I would like to extend my gratitude to last year’s collegiate board and our advisor Dr. Conway for all their hard work in creating a successful year and lay- ing the ground work for many more to come. We are looking forward to an exciting, event- filled year with the new NAfME collegiate board members!
