for an online link to the survey. First, when the notification comes, stop and complete the survey immediately, don’t save it for later. Second, remind your colleagues, even if they’re not MMEA members, to complete the survey. More information about the forthcoming survey will be available on the MMEA website.
With regard to article submissions, the editorial board has two concerns. First, we want to increase the number of submissions so that column editors don’t have to scramble to find authors for an upcoming issue. Second, we want to encourage and support submissions from a wider audience including articles written by practicing Michigan music teachers. In order to facilitate this goal we’re looking into incentives such as journal indexing, which would benefit those interested in developing a publication record, as well as offering editorial or writing assis- tance to individuals who want to contribute but lack the time or expertise to write a scholarly article. You can help in two ways: 1) consider writing an article yourself, and 2) encourage your colleagues to write an article. If you have an idea but are not sure it’s worthwhile or how you might develop it, contact one of the column editors or email me directly (see contact in- formation below). Likewise, if you have presented a workshop at the MMC or elsewhere, consider turning the content into an article. We want to hear from YOU.
If you are reading this, you might be thinking, “Tis sounds great, I know I should contribute, but I just don’t have the time”, and you’re right, time is precious. However, by writing for the Michigan Music Educator you are engaging in profes- sional development, an important component of teacher effec- tiveness. All four of the teacher evaluation models1
approved
by the Michigan State Department of Education include pro- fessional development as a key domain. Tus, publication in the MME is one way to provide evidence of your commitment to and development of pedagogical and content area expertise.
In her president’s message, Karen Salvador reminds us of the many ways the MMEA serves the children of Michigan, their communities and educational partners. Our journal is one of many resources offered by the MMEA with the potential to support a high level of professional development. Yet its suc- cess depends upon your contributions. Please consider joining the ranks of authors whose articles have challenged, enlight- ened, motivated, and inspired readers.
