Fall 2017 From the Desk of The Executive Director Members,

As I write this, our state continues to respond in massive ways to the devastation brought by Hurricane Irma, as well as Hurricanes Harvey and Maria. I doubt there is one of our members who has not been affected, from direct impacts on their communities to deployments aiding other agencies throughout the state and beyond.

These storms have been historic, devastating and deadly. There has been fear, frustration and despair. But there has also been an amazing spirit of pulling together, working harder than we thought was possible, and putting others above self… which is basically the regular law enforcement mentality.

Amy Mercer Executive Director

I couldn’t be prouder of how our members have weathered the storm. In working with the State EOC, I called on many of you to help and you responded with a resounding yes! I’ve seen countless photos and heard even more stories about agencies sending resources, supplies and manpower across the state, pitch- ing in with whatever they have available because we’re all in this together. Even the smallest acts of kind- ness, bravery and heroism will not go unnoticed and unappreciated. Thank you for protecting our state and its people.

From one storm to the next… the 2018 Legislative Season is just a few short months away. Many of you know the first committee week in September was cancelled and the first committee week was October 10. Our legislative priorities this year include efforts to plan for the impact of drugged driving in our state, texting while driving and threats to kill or do bodily injury. We encourage all our members to follow the leg- islative process closely, watch for updates from our Legislative Affairs team, and continue developing rela- tionships with the legislators in your area.

Finally, I want to provide a quick recap of our summer conference in Doral and thank the Miami-Dade Coun- ty Association of Chiefs of Police for their warm welcome and hard work. We had an amazing week of thoughtful and provoking presentations, the opportunity to recognize excellence in public service, and the always meaningful swearing in of this year’s leadership. Planning for our Winter Conference has already started, and I know this is going to be an exciting year for our association.

As always, thank you for everything you are doing for our state. It is an honor to serve and work with each of you.
