MARIINSKY BALLET AND ORCHESTRA Segerstrom Center for the Arts opens its 2017/2018 dance season with
the return of Russia’s renowned Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra,Thursday, October 12 through Sunday, October 15. For its ninth visit, the Company has created a program featuring four beloved ballets choreographed by Michel Fokine. The program opens with his undisputed masterwork, the Romantic one-act balletChopiniana set to music by Frédéric Chopin. It is often said that if Fokine had choreographed no other ballet, his stature in dance history would have been assured with this ballet. Next, in its Segerstrom Center premiere,Le Spectre de la Rose will be performed to music by Carl Maria von Weber. A tour de force created for the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina, the ballet became famous for the male dancer’s legendary leap in the exit scene. The third is Fokine’s moving solo for ballerina,The Swan, originally choreo- graphed for the great Anna Pavlova. This work portrays the final moments in a swan’s life. For the finale, Fokine shares his interpretation of the Arabian tale of One Thousand and One Nightsin the exoticSchéhérazade, danced to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s lush score. still building its reputation-- it’s vital that we go with something we’re confident we can ‘hit out of the park’ every time. AndHunchbackis that show for us. It’s big, with a gorgeous, lush musical score. With so many great voices at our disposal, not to mention a 14-piece orchestra and the biggest pipe organ in the area, we can deliver the rich, haunting, transcendent sound and feel that this show requires,” said Executive Director Mark Wheeler. Artistic Director Megan O’Toole added, “We’ve cast actors that can not only sing and dance, but are equipped with the kind of acting chops that will have audiences enrapt in the multi-layered nuances that live within this classic, heart wrenching tale.” With four successful productions over the past three years under the First
Congregational Church’s banner, the LBLTC is now a separate entity housed on the campus of the church, allowing them to utilize the amazing assets and sup- port of this progressive community. “We perform in the sanctuary of the historic First Congregational Church in Long Beach. A place that, when theLos Angeles Times wrote about it when it first opened back in 1914 said, ‘The sanctuary is magnificent—it’s architecture and appointments are without peer in Southern California. It is the largest church in the Southland, and with its 55-foot high ceilings and glorious stained-glass windows, one is given the impression he is entering one of the great cathedrals of Europe.’ What better place in all of Southern California to presentTheHunchback of Notre Dame?” said Wheeler. In closing, O’Toole points out that “while it’s vitally important to us that we
give our audiences an evening of first-rate entertainment, it’s also important that we give them something to think about on the way home. Hunchback tackles themes of prejudice, man’s inhumanity to man, and standing up for the outcasts and forgotten of our society, while holding to account those with the power to help or abuse. The question that rings through the entire show is, ‘What makes a monster and what makes a man?’ If that’s not timely right now, I don’t know what is.”
The Hunchback of Notre Dame runs Saturdays and Sundays, October 14 through 29.
