by sasha scarlett desert briefs November in Coachella Valley could not offer
more perfect weather, so bring those casual clothes by day and a sweater or light jacket for evening for perfect comfort. Palm Springs is all about Pride this November…
And what a Pride celebration it is! The unique, city-wide Pride event takes place fromWednesday, November 1 through Sunday, November 5, spreading throughout several city blocks in the downtown area and with more than 400,000 attend- ing, it makes it the biggest on the West Coast. For a full schedule of events, performance and all things Palm Springs Pride, go to
pspride.org.
TO MAXIMIZE YOUR PRIDE WEEKEND PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: The Palm Springs Pride Festival is free both Saturday
and Sunday. Saturday offers day and night time experi- ences from 10 a.m. to 10
p.m.The Pride Paradekicks off at 10 a.m. onSunday running until noon, with the Pride Festival open until 6 p.m. that same day. Wednesday, November 1 kicks off Pride with a Candlelight Vigil for George Zander, at 160 La Plaza across from Grand Central. Zander was a local gay activist, who along with his husband, was attacked and killed two years ago, the victim of a hate crime. Palm Springs Pride is a great party, but there are many other things to consider and remember, so please go to this event. Help stop the hate. No LGBTQ guest is going to Pride without having
a bite or two (we gays do like to eat)! These “Official Pride Restaurants” should be at the top of your list when you consider dining: Rick’s Restaurantat 1973 North Palm Canyon Road serves breakfast and memorable, delish cinnamon rolls! Trio, 707 North Palm Canyon, is a Palm Springs staple and always is superb. Eight4Nine, 849 North Palm Canyon, was voted locally as “Best Restaurant” and is my favorite in the city. Go, support Willie and the team! Jakes at 664 North Palm Canyon
is excellent and be sure to try the desserts! My fave coffee spot is Koffi, 515 N. Palm Canyon and it’s on the Parade route.HooDoo at 285 North Palm Canyon is at the end of the parade route, the perfect place to get a bite and after-parade libation. Pinocchio in the Desert, 134 East Tahquitz Canyon, is another of my favorite breakfast places and the food is so yummy! Zin American Bistro at 198 South Palm Canyon Drive is the best destination for foodies and Lulu’s, 200 South Palm Canyon in the heart of downtown, is owned by Pride award-winners Barbara and Jerry Keller and is a “must do!” Las Casuelas at 222 South Palm Canyon Drive is a huge Mexican restaurant in downtown and in their case “size does matter,” because their food is excellent. For Mediterranean, Alicante at 140 South Palm Canyon Drive is your food destination and for those health-minded,Nature’s Health Food at 555 S. Sunrise Way fits the bill. I eat there at least once a week: It’s vegan, vegetarian and delish! Dish Creative Cuisine, is a great emerging restaurant led by lesbians in the kitchen. They are flat-out terrific and to finish up the dining experience, Jus Chillin’ Frozen Desserts at 190 East Tahquitz Canyon, keeps it cool as you enjoy sweet treats. Time for a cocktail? Here are some favorite options
and Palm Springs “Official Pride Watering Holes” who are sponsoring Pride for the right to be called the same. Check out and supportHunters, 302 East Arenas; Streetbar, 224 East Arenas;Toucan’s Tiki Lounge, 2100 North Palm Canyon; Chill Bar, 217 East Arenas and Alibi Azul at 369 North Palm Canyon. All but Toucan’s are within walking distance of one another so Uber over and come have a drinky-poo or two and for those who don’t do…There’s always a selection of non-alcoholic options! For those who want a little something more physical,
walk or run the 5k at the Pride Fun Runon Saturday, November 4. It all takes place in one of the loveliest neighborhoods in Palm Springs—the Old Las Palmas neighborhood—where the “Golden Era” celebrities lived and had all those legendary parties! For more information, go to
priderun.phxfr.org. Enjoy Pride this November, but remember in this
day and age our community is facing a lot of adversity. Let’s remember to work together, support each other and keep our community and each other safe.
