Elementary School Students Will Learn About Formative 1619 Virginia Events In 2019 Commemoration Video Series

educational series will be available to elementary schools in Virginia this fall, along with a complimentary curriculum.
Guardians of Jamestown 1619
teaches students about the seminal 1619 Virginia events that are the focal point of the Commonwealth’s 2019 Commemoration. Tese events include the first representative legislative assembly in the New World, the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of English women in significant numbers, the first official English Tanksgiving in North America, and the entrepre- neurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia Colony.

series consists of six 4-minute videos that are targeted towards fourth and fiſth grade classrooms. Teachers and parents can access the video series on YouTube. Te video series features a young girl named Safiri who, while visiting the Historic Jamestowne, meets

Te Guardians of Jamestown 1619 series fuels children’s natural curiosity and engages them in an adventure with Safiri,” said Kathy Spangler, Executive Director of the 2019 Commemoration. “Te series makes history come to life for students who are just starting to learn about our nation’s – and Virginia’s - history. It’s important that we share the events of 1619 with students in an interesting, yet informative way, and we explain how these events are relevant to their lives today.”

Warner & Kaine Announce $644,000 in Federal Funding to Support Three Virginia Colleges And Universities
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Mark Warner and Library

Kaine announced $644,392 in federal funding for three Virginia colleges and universities through the Institute of Museum and
Services
(IMLS). The funding, which will go to Hampton University, the Virginia Community College System, and Virginia
Polytechnic Institute State University (Virginia and Tech),
will be awarded through National Leadership Grants or grants from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program in Virginia.
