Procurement Administrator Appointed in Chesapeake

City Manager James E. Baker has announced that, following an extensive search process, Anthony E. Cannion, MPA, CPPB, VCO, has been appointed as Procurement Administrator for the City, effective July 17. Cannion comes to Chesapeake from the Portsmouth Public Schools, where he has served as Purchasing Manager since May of 2015. He will receive a salary of $100,000.

"Because procurement touches every facet of the City organization, it was critical to find an Administrator with a broad background and understanding of both the complexities and nuances of the position," said Baker. "Anthony Cannion fills that role admirably, and I am confident he will bring both innovation and good stewardship to this vital task. His skill set and

experience will complement our procurement team and ensure continued quality service for the organization."

Cannion holds both a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Legal Services (Pre-Law, dual majors) degree from the University of Central Florida. He is a Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB) and a Virginia Contracting Officer (VCO). Cannion was named Purchasing Manager of the Year for 2004 by the State of Mississippi.

"The opportunity to serve the City of Chesapeake, with its reputation for quality and innovation, was one that I simply could not pass up," commented Cannion. "The skills, experience, and dedication of the procurement team give me great confidence that we can continue to be an asset in Chesapeake's growth, while ensuring the City gets the best value for every dollar of public money it expends, no matter what the purpose.

Prior to his position in Portsmouth, Cannion worked in procurement positions for the Virginia Community College System and Norfolk State University, where he also served as Assistant to the Vice President for Finance and Administration. He also served with educational and municipal entities in Mississippi and Florida.

Living History in Hampton: The Martha Ann Fields Story

Experience the true story of Martha Ann Fields, who escaped from slavery to Fort Monroe, and whose legacy is evident on the Peninsula today, as portrayed by actress Valerie Davis at the Hampton History Museum on Monday, September 11, 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 pm.

Through her portrayal, Davis relates the heartbreaking story of Fields having to witness her 12-year-old daughter Louisa being sold on the auction block. She tells of her harrowing escape with eight (8) children from the Nutshell Plantation in Hanover County in 1862. Following an arduous journey, Fields achieves sanctuary at Fort Monroe as a free woman raising her children and placing a strong emphasis on education as the key to their success. After the Civil War her family is reunited, including the daughter and two sons that were sold into slavery. Fields' story shows not only the brutality of slavery, but illuminates also the triumph of those who overcame extreme adversity.

The impact of Fields’ legacy is felt today. Her son James Apostle Fields was the first former slave to graduate from Hampton Normal School (today Hampton University). His house still stands in Newport News and is now a museum. His sister, Catherine Fields graduated also from Hampton. James became the Commonwealth Attorney and served two years in the House of Delegates. Her youngest son, George Washington Fields, was the first black man to graduate from Cornell University after serving as Governor Cornell's Butler.

The program is free to museum members, and $5.00 to non-members. The Hampton History Museum is located at 120 Old Hampton Lane in Downtown Hampton. There is free parking in the garage across the street from the museum. For more information, call 757-727-1102 or Facebook/HamptonHistoryMuseum.

Two New LED Displays Light Up Norfolk's Revitalized Waterside District

Sansi North America (SNA) Displays, a leading manufacturer of custom LED display and lighting solutions, provided two S|Video™ LED displays for Norfolk's revitalized Waterside District.

Located in the heart of Norfolk's central business district and next to the city's world-class waterfront along the banks of the Elizabeth River, Waterside District is the area's newest dining and entertainment experience.

As part of the display project, SNA Displays manufactured and supplied two large LED displays which were installed onto separate, custom-built towers placed at opposite ends of the venue's property. Both exterior video screens employ a 10 mm pixel pitch and utilize surface-mount device (SMD) pixel packaging technology. Each display measures 22'10" high by 15'8" wide and has a resolution of 696 pixels high by 480 pixels wide.

“This was an interesting and rewarding project for us,” said Jason Helton, executive vice president for SNA Displays. “The client reached out to us for help late in the process and, with very little notice, we were able to complete the project in time for the venue’s highly-publicized grand opening festivities. Sansi stepped in to handle the situation for a client in need of support.”

Rasool Sayed, SNA Display's project manager for the job, reiterated the challenge in getting the displays installed before Waterside District's grand opening.

"The biggest challenge of this project was the tight deadline," he said. "But, as always, our team delivered quality products on time and with outstanding service. The result is two state-of-the-art LED displays that will help illuminate the city's revitalized waterfront."

Other companies involved in the project included Cordish Companies, the real estate development firm, and Sullaway Engineering, a full-service engineering company tasked with handling the screens' structural engineering.
