the AQHA Professional Horse- men’s Grievance Committee. The International Best Remuda Award was also approved. An interna- tional education marketplace grant application concept was approved and more will be communicated in the future as to how this will work for international affiliates. The executive also approved

discontinuation of the AQHA In- centive Fund and a phase out of award payment through 2020.

By Kathy Patterson AQHA Director

Executive Committee Actions from July Meeting The AQHA Executive Com-

mittee met July 24-26 in Amarillo. Here are highlights from the meet- ing.

The committee evaluated a

proposal for reviewing the AQHA Racing Challenge program model and sent it to the Challenge Cham- pionship Task Force for further study.

They approved the AQHA

Affiliate Show Task Force and tasked it with developing a system and encouraging affiliates to host/approve introductory or sin- gle-judged shows. The task force will make final recommendations and a report at the 2018 convention. A task force was approved as

a recommendation from the AQHA World Show Subcommittee to eval- uate alternative methods for build- ing purses at the World Show. A pilot project has been proposed in- volving halter horses. A halter town hall meeting was held at the Ford Youth World to get input from halter exhibitors and trainers on the potential changes. The executive created the

AQHA Leveling Review Task Force and approved the structure of

AQHA Incentive Fund to Cease Stallion & Foal Nominations As a means to conclude the

program, the American Quarter Horse Association Incentive Fund will not accept foal nominations past 2018 and, effective immedi- ately, will no longer accept stallion nominations. “The AQHA Incen- tive Fund was a landmark program for the equine industry, having paid out more than $80 million in its lifetime,” said AQHA Chief Show Officer Pete Kyle. “The fund was so successful that it became a model for many others. However, multiple factors in the past decade con- tributed to the Incentive Fund’s decline.” Ultimately, a lack of participation led the AQHA Executive Com- mittee, at its July 2017 meeting, to approve the in- centive program’s termina- tion. The conclusion of the program will allow time and resources to move to the re- search and development of new potential incentive pro- grams for competitors and breeders. With no new stal- lion nominations coming in, the Incentive Fund should conclude in a few years. “For owners and nomina- tors wondering when the last payout will be made, we

are looking closely at the financial reports for the Incentive Fund and will make a decision about that very soon,” said AQHA Treasurer and Chief Operating Officer Trent Taylor. “Preliminary examination indicates it will likely pay through the 2020 show season.” Depending on the breeding and foaling year, stallion and foal nominators can apply for a nomination refund as follows: • Stallion nominators for 2017 breeding season – option of refund or nominator may opt to remain in the Incentive Fund as it winds down • 2017 foal nominators – option of refund if the nominator is still the recorded owner of the foal or the nominator may opt to remain in the Incentive Fund as it winds down • Nomination payments for stal- lions or foals made prior to 2017 are non-refundable, as such pay- ments have already been allo- cated/distributed for payout years Refunds must be applied for

AQHA Director’s Report

by September 30, 2017. As stated above, 2018 foals

may be nominated but only if the sire was nominated for the 2017 breeding season and such stallion nominator does not request a refund. “To any- one who has ever nominated a foal or stallion, owned or shown an Incen- tive Fund horse, thank you for sup- porting the program,” Kyle said. “It was your support that made this the greatest incentive fund program in the equine industry.” For questions regarding the In-

centive Fund and its termination, read the AQHA Incentive Fund Q&A and Incentive Fund timeline. To re- quest a refund, contact Brianna Charles

at 806-378-4535 or bcharles@aqha.org.
