Ontario SPCA lays charges following investigation into horse that fell out of a trailer
Prescott, ON (Aug. 8, 2017) – A man from Alfred, On- tario, located about 70 kilo- metres east of Ottawa, has been charged with animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act following an in- vestigation into an incident in which a horse fell out of a moving livestock trailer. On July 14, 2017, the
accused was travelling east on Highway 401, just east of Prescott, when the horse fell out through an open
Cayuga Animal
Lovers Left Homeless And In
Mourning
Kelly Bowers A fiery blaze started in
the early morning of Thurs- day August 22nd and de- stroyed the Cayuga home of animal lovers Sue Shipley and Jim Partington. The couple was devastated not just by the loss of the house, but by the deaths of 3 dozen animals within the walls. The number of casual-
ties was so high because the couple rescued parrots and had 20 in the house. All were killed by the blaze, as were their 4 cats and 11 kit- tens. Lastly, one of their dogs ran back into the burn- ing house and has not been seen since. In all, 36 ani- mals sadly died. “I think of what I lost,”
Shipley says. “The birds… I don’t care about material things but I cared about my animals.” Fortunately no humans
were killed and the couple’s horses were also spared. That’s the good news. The bad news is that with the loss of their home, and no house insurance to help re- build, the animals they orig- inally spared from going to a slaughter house, will now have to be sold to good homes as the couple has no way to care for them. They were unable to keep up on insurance payments a cou- ple years ago and unfortu- nately lost on the gamble you take to do without it. Although Shipley and
Partington lost all their be- longings in the home, in- cluding family photos, they are very grateful for the generosity of their commu- nity. Neighbours, friends and complete strangers have been generously dropping off clothing and necessities and offering to help them get back on their feet. door at the back of the trailer. The horse – a mare – was injured, but survived. Her injuries were treated by a veterinarian and she is responding well to treatment. The man has been charged
with causing distress to an animal and failing to transport the horse in a manner that ensures its phys- ical safety and general welfare.
He is due to appear in a Provincial Offences Court in Brockville on Sept. 13, 2017. “If you fail to transport an
animal in a safe manner that en- sures its safety and welfare, there will be consequences under the law,” says Bonnie Bishop, Senior Inspector – Farm Animal Welfare, Ontario SPCA. “Transporting an
animal is a serious responsibility and you must take every precau- tion to ensure that animal is not put in distress.” To report animal cruelty, call
the Ontario SPCA’s province wide animal cruelty hotline at 310-SPCA (7722).
