Haleswor th’ s Histor i c Par i sh Church
For a thousand years, the men, women and children of Halesworth and the surrounding areas have gathered on this site Sunday by Sunday. They have also come to mark life’s gateways at christenings, weddings and funerals - asking God, the Creator and Lover of all, to bless.
The present church was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Local patrons and benefactors have built and maintained the church so that it has been a fitting place for the whole community in every age. Now we need to move forward again. It’s a matter both of development and survival.
St Mary’s today (that’s the community of people who make up the congregation) are an INCLUSIVE church. We welcome everyone, whoever they are, wherever they are coming from. You do not need to toe the line or believe six impossible things before breakfast. We have a vision to make the building as useful to the whole community as it was in the 13th century - a place of meeting, a place for children, a place for music and art, a place for just being, a place where modern families enjoy modern facilities... But we can’t realise this vision without you.
The picture below is an artist’s impression of what St Mary’s needs to become - warm, open and inviting, for Christian worship, and for people of all faiths and none. We need the benefactors of today to help us realise our vision for making Halesworth’s ancient church new, and we need the whole community - because it’s your church and we hold it in solemn trust for you. We welcome your help, in whatever form it is given. To see more of our plans and our needs, please visit:
