Pacifi c Fleet Cmdr: Remains of Some USS John S. McCain Sailors Located From U.S. 7th Fleet Public Aff airs
CHANGI NAVAL BASE, Republic Of Singapore (NNS) -- Adm. Scott Swift, commander, Pacifi c Fleet, said some of the 10 missing USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) Sailors were discovered Aug. 22, by divers performing recovery operations inside the guided-missile destroyer. Swift also said the Royal Malaysian
Navy has reported the discovery of potential remains of another missing McCain Sailor, located while the ship was providing search and rescue assistance east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. We are still searching for our missing
Sailors. That remains our focus, said Swift to a group of international media during a press briefi ng at Changi Naval Base, Singapore, where McCain is currently moored. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to
be with the families of those Sailors and the families of our Sailors who were injured,” he said. The search for the missing Sailors has
been ongoing since early Aug. 21 following the collision of McCain and merchant vessel Alnic MC. Royal Malaysian Navy coastal patrol craft Petir (12) and Pang Alang (39), Handalan-class missile boat KD Handalan and Lekiu-class frigate KD Lekiu (30) along with two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency vessels assisted in Tuesday’s search eff orts.
Republic of Singapore Navy Fear-
less-class patrol ships Noble Pearl (PCG 54) and Noble Knight (PCG 56) as well as Singaporean aircraft also aided in the day’s search.
Those vessels were joined by aviation assets from USS America (LHA 6), which
will continue combing the area east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in the vicinity of the collision. “While the search and rescue eff orts
continue, I sincerely thank our Singapore partners, our Malaysian partners and ev- eryone who has responded with urgency, compassion and tireless commitment,” Swift said. The ship was transiting to Singapore
for a routine port visit when the collision occurred. Alnic MC is a Liberian-fl agged 600-
foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000. The incident will be investigated to
determine the facts and circumstances of the collision.

From Naval History and Heritage Com- mand, Communication and Outreach Division
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- A team of civilian researchers led by entrepreneur and philan- thropist Paul G. Allen has announced they have found the wreck of the World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35), which was lost July 30, 1945. This is a signifi cant discovery consider-
ing the depth of the water in which the ship was lost - more than 18,000 feet. Around 800 of the ship’s 1,196 Sailors and Marines survived the sinking, but after four to fi ve days in the water - suff ering exposure, dehy- dration, drowning, and shark attacks - only 316 survived. The wreck was located by the expedi-

McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. North Pacifi c Ocean. “To be able to honor the brave men
of the USS Indianapolis and their families through the discovery of a ship that played such a signifi cant role in ending World War II is truly humbling,” said Allen. “As Amer- icans, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the crew for their courage, persistence and sacri- fi ce in the face of horrendous circumstances. While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming.” Indianapolis was lost in the fi nal days
of World War II when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the early morning hours of July 30, 1945. The Indianapolis sank in 12 minutes, making it impossible to send a distress signal or deploy much of its life-saving equipment. Prior to the attack, the Indianapolis had just completed a se- cret mission delivering components of the atomic bomb used in Hiroshima that would ultimately help end the war in the Pacifi c. “Even in the worst defeats and disasters there is valor and sacrifi ce that deserves
