Page 6. MAINE COASTAL NEWS August 2017 70s Memories: Eugene "Genie" Thurston

Eugene “Genie” Thurston, Family Man, Ex-Harbormaster, Lobsterman, And Good Neighbor

Eugene “Genie” Thurston III passed

away on June 13 at his home in Manset/ Southwest Harbor. He was great guy, and we’re going to miss him. Genie was my neighbor in Manset when I lived there full time. Hard worker, briefl y in the restaurant business with his lovely wife Carmella, for several years the Harbor Master (a position now passed on to his son Adam), and fi nal- ly what he liked doing best, lobster fi shing. “Genie”, the only name I’ve ever

known him by, was 69. Five years younger than myself, he, as did many of his com- patriots, had to face the jungle hell of Viet Nam for a two year tour of duty. Genie was one of the fortunate ones, returning to take

up a career of lobster fi shing and harbor mastering. “When we were young,” recalls Don

Ellis who lived directly across the street from Genie, “it was a coin toss whether I was at Genie’s house or he was in ours. We couldn’t wait to for school to be out and we could be in the woods with BB guns, .22’s and later shotguns. On weekends and school vacations we’d be gone the entire day, parents never worried about us, we’d be hunting or building brush camps, any- thing to be outside.” One of Don’s favorite memories was

shooting coots off the Manset/Seawall shore. “Genie had this old, long bod- ied Beagle who never quite understood he wasn’t bred to be a retriever, but still couldn’t get enough of it anyhow.” They’d wait for the coots to dive, then run for the

At Front Street Shipyard in Belfast is this very interesting yacht LITTLE VIGILANT, which was built by Abeking & Rassumssen in Germany just before they built the Concordia yawls. What is interesting is that her interior is very similar to the Concordias.

shoreline, wait for the birds to surface, then blast away. The old beagle would jump in and swim for a retrieve. “Only problem sometimes,” Don said, “The Beagle didn’t know he wasn’t supposed to breathe un- derwater and every so often there’d be a mighty eruption of bubbles as he dove for a wounded bird.” Genie took on the job of Harbormas-

ter in 1991 after lobstering from a skiff for several years. He was a good person for this position. Had a good grasp on the various aspects of the job and understood when he needed to make those of us who used the town docks regularly to follow the time limits or when to cut us some slack. Genie got done in 2008 and returned

to lobstering. His son Adam, now in his fa- ther’s old position tells a story of when he and his Dad were heading out the Western Way (entrance to the Great Harbor of the Cranberries, Northeast and Southwest Har- bors) to set a halibut trawl. As they cleared the sea buoy, Genie spotted a female moose trying to make Great Cranberry (as deer and other large animals seem to try every so often) and tried with Adam’s help to get the moose to turn around. Tried every- thing they could think of, blowing the horn, shaking line, circling with the boat. Noth- ing would work. They continued on, never knowing whether the Moose who seemed to be struggling with the current and tide ever made it to the island.

Adam also tells a cute story of how

Genie met Carmella. “Mom and a few girls had rented this house on the harbor. Most of them working at the same place in town. This particular sunny summer day they happened to all be down on the dock in front of the house sunbathing. Genie, on his way up the harbor after getting bait spotted this dock full of scantly clothed girls and allowed he should swing by to say hello. There he met Carmella for the fi rst time and wasn’t long before he’d asked her out, the rest being history. Together they raised two boys, Adam and Aaron. All his life, Genie loved the outdoors.

Loved to fi sh and hunt. Just loved being in the woods or throwing a fl y into fast water for which he developed quite a reputation. Genie’s funeral service was held at St.

Peter’s church in Manset. There were so many of us in attendance to mourn Genie’s passing that at the announced time of ser- vice the line waiting to get in still reached into the parking lot and the church was already fi lled with people, many sitting or standing. People fi nally had to stand out- side the open windows to barely hear the minister recite the service. Said they didn’t get that many parishioners for Christmas Eve services. We’re, all of us who knew Genie, go-

ing to miss his smile, his ready wit, his sun- ny disposition, and most of all his willing- ness to help. He was one of a kind.
