WILD WEST took the easy victory with LAST DESIGN second.


STONINGTON – With the Boothbay Har- bor, Rockland, Bass Harbor and Moosabec Reach races completed next up was Ston- ington. For new boats, the one that everyone


had been waiting to see was Andrew Tay- lor’s BLUE EYED GIRL, a Morgan Bay 38 powered with a 900-hp Scania and she was there. Another new boat was Jeromy Simmons’ AVERY & ALDEN, a Calvin Beal 42 powered with a 900-hp engine and entered in Class N. The big surprise was Shawn Alley

by the spectators as Stonington has a huge fl eet of these wooden beauties. The winner was Ben Weed’s EMMA & ANDREW. We have fi ve Gasoline Classes and to


date the number of entrants has been down and today was no diff erent. There were no entrants in Class A; and Class E. The winner in Class B was Nicholas Eaton’s DOMINIC L.; Class C Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIA- MOND and in Class D, LITTLE GIRLS, In the Wooden Boat Races there was


just one in A, LITTLE GIRLS and four in B, which was won by RESOLUTE. LEDGE HAMMER, owned by Avery


Waterman, easily outpaced the other two competitors for fi rst in Diesel Class A. Seven boats were on the line for Class B., which was won Keith Dunham’s LADY ALYSSA, We knew that KIMBERLY BELLE was re- powered, and when the fl ag dropped he eas- ily won Class C. There were just three boats on the line for Class D and Garrett Bates’ TRAVELLER took the early lead and won. In Class E the win went to Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE. There were 14 boats entered in Class F so they were broken up into two heats and the top three boats from each heat would then race off for the class winner. No

one was surprised to see Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE beat all comers. In Diesel Class G Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF led the other fi ve racers to the fi nish. In Class H fi rst went to Adam McDonald’s MISS MADDISON. The Class I winner was Patrick Faulking- ham’s MARGARET E. One of the crowd favourites is Andy Gove and his UNCLE’S UFO and he came out and won Class J. Next up was BLUE EYED GIRL's fi rst race in Class K. She had some stiff competition with Jeff Eaton’s LA BELLA VITA and Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE, but BLUE EYED GIRL led the others to the fi nish. In Class L it was all WILD WILD WEST. Four boats were on the line for Class M(A), but it was Chris Pope’s OLD SCHOOL that came out the winner. In Class M(B) no one was surprised to see Eric Beal’s KIMBERLY ANN led the other fi ve competitors to the fi nish. In Diesel Class N, Marshall Spear’s JACALWA took the win. It took two heats and a fi nal race to de-


termine the winner of the Deer Isle-Stoning- ton Exhibition Race, which was LA BELLA VITA.

In today’s world it is all about information in an instance and I have worked on building databases on vessels, people and businesses from all over the world, but as important, is the work in the newspapers. Newspapers have a vast wealth of information that needs to be computerized and made available to the public. Tim Hodgdon told me once that I would not live long enough to fi nish what I have started and some else added if I did the math he was right. I absolutely love doing this research and will do what I can with the hope that when I buy the farm someone else picks up where I left off and fi nishes the endeavour. So why a B+, because I should have


done more. Time was a factor early on and technology did not make certain things, like taping interviews, easy. Fortunately I have, I hope, a lot more years left in doing this and I will go till I cannot do it anymore.

was WILD WILD WEST followed by MO- TIVATION. For a number of years the Stonington


races have off ered the Jimmy Stevens Cup for the fastest working lobster boat. This was won by Ed Shirley's MISS KARLEE. In the Fastest Lobster Boat Afl oat just two boats came to the line LITTLE GIRLS and WILD WILD WEST. We all knew LIT- TLE GIRLS would get him out of the hole, but did WILD WILD WEST have enough speed and course to get by? With the drop of the fl ag LITTLE GIRLS jumped out to a two boat length lead. WILD WILD WEST looked like she was gaining, but it also looked like LITTLE GIRLS had enough power to maintain her distance as she went on for the win. Was LITTLE GIRLS show- ing all she had was anyone’s guess, but it was a great way to end the day. Now it is on to Friendship.
