Ten ‘Young Event Horse’ Graduates Compete at Rolex Kentucky

f the 60 competitors at this year’s Rolex Kentucky— the only four-star event held each year on this side of the Atlantic—ten of the horses went through the

U.S. Eventing Association’s Young Event Horse program. That’s an impressive number of alumni to make it to the highest level of the sport. Seven of the ten ended up com- pleting all three phases. Here’s a look at these YEH graduates and how they fared at the event, held last April.

Class of 2012

Cooley Cross Border: Ridden by Kim Severson, he was a favorite as he had won the five-year-old division in 2012 for the east coast on a score of 78.99%. Owned by The Cross Syndicate, “Cross” is by the Irish Draught Sport Horse Dia- mond Roller, who comes from the Cor de la Bryère stallion line, and is out of the mare Whos Diaz. The gelding was bred by Johnny Duffy in Ireland before being imported to the United States in 2011. He’s had lots of blue ribbons, along with top ten CCI3* finishes (third at the 2015 Fair Hill Inter- national and seventh in 2016) and a win at the Advanced level at Carolina International in March. At Rolex 2017, he was third after dressage but retired on

cross-country.

Pfun: Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables’ Irish Sport Horse only participated in one five-year-old class, where he earned a score of 75.21% with then-rider Robert Costello. “Teddy” was bred in Ireland by Tracy Priest. He is by the Dutch Warmblood Tadmus and out of the Holsteiner mare Celerina. Like his classmate Cross, Teddy also made his debut to international competition in 2013. He’s since man- aged 18 FEI completions through the CCI3* level. At Rolex 2017, Pfun and Will Faudree placed twenty-fifth

after a double clear in stadium. Class of 2011

Covert Rights: Colleen Rutledge’s Covert Rights had top ten finishes as both a four-year-old in 2010 and a five-year- old in 2011 at the YEH East Coast Championships. Born and bred in the U.S, “CR” is a Thoroughbred-cross bred by Colleen. He’s by the sport horse Black Fox Farm Incognito (a Clydesdale x TB) and out of Thoroughbred Let’s Get It Right. Before 2017, the pair had completed two CCI4* events together, finishing eleventh at Rolex Kentucky and twenty- second at the Burghley Horse Trials in 2015. At Rolex 2017, the pair unfortunately withdrew during the initial horse inspection.

Indy 500: “Indy” won her first four-year-old class at Cot- tonwood Ranch in 2009. In 2010, the Thoroughbred mare’s true five-year-old year, Andrea Baxter decided to breed Indy

to the Holsteiner Linaro and, thanks to the “maternity year” rule, she could compete in the five-year-old classes in 2011. Indy’s foal, Laguna Seca (Linaro x Indy 500), also competed in the YEH program and is now a seven-year-old competing at the Preliminary level. At Rolex 2017, Indy and Andrea Baxter finished and

placed thirty-first.

Never Outfoxed: The Fox Syndicate’s Never Outfoxed par- ticipated in the YEH program as a four-year-old with Mary Kate Mallory as his rider. Holly Payne Caravella took over the ride in 2011, and since then the two have had thirteen inter- national completions through the CCI4* level. At Rolex 2017, they finished in nineteenth place, the highest-placing YEH graduate.

Truly Wiley: Bred by the eventing legend Bruce Davidson, Truly Wiley was ready to tackle his first four-star at Kentucky with Kelly Prather. “Wiley” is a 10-year-old Thoroughbred by Salute the Truth and out of Tears of Loss. Along with Never

Above: The top two placing YEH graduates at Rolex Kentucky 2017 are Top: Never Outfoxed with Holly Payne Caravella finishing 19th and Bottom: High Times with Jennifer McFall placing 24th.
