All foals and horses re- ceiving passports will also be DNA typed and microchipped, and foals will be is- sued a complimen- tary USEF lifetime number. Warmblood mares and stallions from other accepted Warmblood breed- ing organizations are eligible for the Westfalen Warmblood books, as are Tor- oughbreds and Anglo- Arabs. Breed books for German Riding Ponies, Haflingers, Knabstruppers and Lipizzaners also exist, and have their own eligibility and bylaws. “The Sky is the Limit” Over the years inspecting in North America for the RPSI I have come to know many of your breeding pro- grams, and consider it an honor to continue to work with North Ameri- can breeders, who have become like a big extended family. Now the brand has changed to the well-known Westfalen W and my head- quarters are the Westfalen Verband in Münster, Germany. But what doesn’t change is the service and support for North American breeders. Now the sky is the limit for our breeders—with the strong history and success of the West- falen Verband backing up the top horses which can be bred here, the future looks bright. Why brand when the horse is already mi- crochipped? We feel a visible mark such as a registry/breed brand provides a safeguard for that horse’s future, his or her value and a right to a dignified end. Un- til every sale yard, auction house, brand inspector and slaugh- terhouse has universal chip readers, access to databases and person- nel willing and expe- rienced in identifying horses from their chip is limited, therefore the brand gives an immedi- ate symbol of identity. ing new programs and promoting North American-bred Westfalen horses just as effectively as their German-speaking cousins! Beginning in 2018, the Westfalen NA will celebrate North American-bred Westfalens and imports alike with a superb awards program. Programs such as the select online foal auction and the annual stallion service auction and futu- rity will continue to provide North American breeders with options for marketing, promotion and sales. Te Westfalen NA also supports the new North American stallion testing taking place at Hilltop Farm in Maryland and Pollyrich Farm in California October 31 to November 6 this year. Opportunities in Germany abound, including the an-
nual Westfalen Week in late July, which culminates in the Northern Westfalen (NRW) Elite Foal Auction. Te West- falen NA will host a breeder’s tour to the Westfalen/NRW Warmblood Stallion Approvals, November 20–25, 2017 in Münster, Germany.
