exciting opportunity for breeders who are dedicated to im- proving the development and genetic diversity of the Ger- man Riding Pony in the U.S. and Canada. North American breeders are fortunate to have access

to top Westfalen stallions here at home as well, represent- ing some of the world’s most successful bloodlines. Two very successful stallions owned by Melissa Mulchahey of Rose Lane Sporthorses are Westfalens: Golden State, who was 2012 Bundeschampion and now stands at stud in the U.S., and Golden West, 2014 and 2015 Bundeschampion. Dressman’s bloodlines are well represented by the champion stallion Fox Creek’s Diamond King, owned by Dianna Orona of Fox Creek Farm. A third and equally successful bloodline is represented by the extremely successful dressage stallion Popeye, standing at Hilltop Farm. Tese are just a few of the successful Westfalen ponies standing in North America.

Another double-Bundeschampion Westfalen pony stal- lion standing at stud in the U.S. is Te Patchwork Ranch’s Nuno (Nabucco R x Van Gogh x Gamen). Nuno earned his Bundeschampion title in the jumping division as a five-

year-old and as a six-year-old. He was also qualified for the Bundeshampionat in dressage! Te Westfalen registry looks forward to registering

many more successful North American-bred sport ponies and being fully supportive of its North American breeders through education and innovative programs that promote and support the breeding of Westfalen ponies. In the spirit of increased education, the Westfalen NA is look- ing forward to offering trips to German pony farms, pony stallion licensings and pony mare and foal shows to North Americans who want to train their eye and expand their knowledge of the pedigree, conformation and type that we strive for in producing the best ponies in the world.

BREEDER SPOTLIGHTS Westfalen bloodlines work for three very different farms.

Philippe and Juliet LeDorze • Ios Ranch Located on the water in Bainbridge Island, Washington, Ios Ranch stands the imported Westfalen stallion Cornet Fever. “We found Cornet Fever in the summer of 2009 in Ger-

many. We had been looking for a jumper and loved the Cor- rado/Clinton line. Ironically, we had retired from breeding and weren’t really looking for a stallion. On top of that, it was my birthday and I was at another barn, cel- ebrating the day with a dressage horse I had just bought. My husband had found a gelding he thought he’d buy, but detoured on the way to meet us just to quickly see this one last horse. It was meant to be. Cor- net Fever’s breeding is exactly what we wanted: he is by the famous

los Ranch’s Westfalen stallion Cor- net Fever (Cornet Obolensky x Grand Ferdinand II x Parsival) with Jennifer Wymer on board.

Cornet Obolensky and his mother line goes back to an old dressage line, Grande. I think my husband spent 20 minutes with Cornet Fever in total but the stallion’s character, talent and sensitive feel immediately won him over,” Juliet explains.

44 September/October 2017 SPECIAL Westfalen SECTION

“My husband showed him for the next five years, compet- ing and winning at the Grand Prix level. Now our assistant trainer is competing him at that level. Te recent expansion of the North American Westfalen association dovetails nicely with our renewed interest in breeding, since we have not been promoting our stallion beyond competition,” she continues. “Te key for us is to find mares and bloodlines that will complement Cornet Fever’s strengths. He is very sensitive, has good feet and a great brain. He is a modern horse, so he can be bred to a heavier mare successfully. In our view, customers are looking for rideable, amateur-friendly horses. So we are really looking for mares with good character to enhance Cornet Fever’s amazing temperament. He is easy to ride (my husband jokes I should compete him in dressage) and good around other horses. We ship him with mares and he behaves better than the geldings. We are so excited to be embarking on this next phase of his career, and since he is still actively competing, clients can really see what he offers.”

Marilyn Gilligan • MG Sporthorses Located in Columbia, South Carolina, Marilyn Gilligan’s MG Sporthorses focuses on using frozen semen from West- falen stallions to build a dressage program from the founda- tion up.
