Sheep producers flock to local

education sessions

The most interesting part of sheep farming for many producers is getting to know others while learning how to better manage their sheep and land, whether two acres or 200.

Wool Gatherings JO SLEIGH

Fortunately, there are always new producers wanting to learn, most starting with small flocks. The following two groups are active in their geographical areas and usually arrange speakers, a short general meeting, coffee and cookies. They will both be meeting for most months in 2017.

Penny Stapleton from Holly Hill Farm near Ladysmith has arranged a series of monthly meetings over the past year that are open to all. These will continue in 2017. If you have questions and want to know the upcoming specific dates, subject matter and speaker name, phone Penny at

250.713.1984, or e-mail her at [hollyhillfarm@telus.net]. She’ll be glad to add you to her mailing list for advance notice of meeting dates, locations, topics and speakers names. The meetings are free and are held about every month in different participants’ homes. They usually attract from eight to 16 participants. All owners of sheep are welcome; some talks will be of interest to all living in BC, while some will be oriented to the concerns of people living between Duncan and Nanaimo. Upcoming speakers for the next few months include nutritionist Everett Dixon, speaking on sheep nutritional requirements from early gestation through to late lactation, bottle or creep-fed lambs, weaning, and finishing feeders.

Speakers from the province include a BC Ministry of Agriculture staff person discussing how to keep flocks healthy and a water specialist from the BC Ministry of the Environment discussing groundwater licensing. Keith Wilson from the
