BC farm leaders make Top 50 list

by DAVID SCHMIDT

VANCOUVER – Ladysmith dairyman Wally Smith is one of several BC agriculture

industry leaders included in the country’s top 50 lists for 2016. Smith, who is in his final year as chair of Dairy Farmers of Canada, is on Canadian Business Magazine’s list of Canada’s 50 Most Powerful People in 2016 as well as the Globe and Mail’s Food 53 List for 2016.

the dairy industry,” noting he is “committed to keeping dairy prices high through a quota system and keeping the industry as insulated as possible from the rest of the world via a tariff wall.” It says the fact all three major federal parties remain committed to preserving the supply management system is proof of his clout in Ottawa. Smith credits the rest of the DFC board and staff for the accolades, noting “you don’t make those lists on your own.”

And that’s not all!

Other BC producers on the Food 53 list include BC Greenhouse Growers Association executive director Linda Delli Santi and Christine Coletta of Okanagan Crush Pad.

The Globe and Mail calls Delli Santi “an astute lobbyist,” crediting her for earning a permanent carbon tax-relief grant from the provincial government for greenhouse growers. It notes she also chairs the Canadian Horticultural Council greenhouse committee and will therefore likely be lobbying for a national exemption from the federal Liberals’ proposed national carbon tax.

“Watch out, Ottawa. Here she comes,” the Globe and Mail warns. The Globe and Mail calls Coletta “a tireless champion of BC wine,” saying she “helped get BC wines on the map” and is making sure they stay there. It notes she followed up nine years as executive director for the BC Wine Institute with a successful career as a winery consultant. Five years ago, she founded Okanagan Crush Pad to produce not only her own wines but act as an industry incubator.
