23 PAS aims for record attendance with sold-out trade show
Blockbuster presentations offer valuable lessons for growing farms
ABBOTSFORD – The Pacific Agriculture Show has been the biggest show of the year in BC for the past 18 years, and the 19th annual show at Tradex in Abbotsford on January 26-28 promises to be no exception.
Preview DAVID SCHMIDT
Last year’s event attracted a record 9,000 visitors and PAS trade show co-ordinator Jim Shepard expects similar numbers this year. A lot depends on the weather, but with the trade show once again sold out, those who come will be able to visit several hundred exhibitors with the latest wares.
“We’re still waiting for Tradex to expand their facilities because we always have a waiting list of exhibitors,” Shepard says.
To accommodate more inside exhibitors, many of the tractor and large equipment displays have been moved outside in recent years and that area continues to expand. Two tents provide
additional covered space. The MNP Pavilion at the south end of Wing 2 will be home of the daily growers’ luncheon, Thursday afternoon opening reception, Friday
afternoon tailgate party and the petting zoo. The Scotiabank Pavilion on the east side will be used for the dairy lunch and hoof- trimming demonstration. Trade show entry is
included with registrations for the horticulture short course, BC Dairy Expo and Value of Biogas West show. Adults wishing to only tour the trade show can buy tickets at the door for $15. Children under 14 are admitted free. They will also get free ice cream on Saturday. Trade show

Gala affair
If you were planning to attend the BC Agriculture Industry Gala at the Quality Inn (formerly the Ramada) in Abbotsford on Wednesday,
January 25, and don’t have a ticket, make other plans. “We have been sold out since before December,” reports gala co-ordinator Christine Koch.
The gala celebrates
agriculture’s achievements in the past year. Champions to be fêted include the BC Agriculture Council leadership
award winner, the Agriculture in the Classroom teacher of the year, AgSafe BC’s first-ever AgSafe champion and the 2017 BC Outstanding Young Farmer.
After proving such a hit last year, Abbotsford’s clean comedian, Leland Klassen, will again be the gala’s emcee/ entertainer.
