Developer boosts village play area
PARISH councillors in Marden took great pleasure in opening a revitalised play area in the vil- lage. The play area, which has been turned into a toddlers’ paradise, features a swing, slide, static train and toadstools that are sure to de- light youngsters. The £32,000 cost has been funded
by developer Redrow, as a condi- tion of planning permission for its Highwood Green estate, drawn down by the parish council. Marden Parish Council has also
taken over the ownership of the Napoleon Drive play area from Wimpey Homes, which built The Cherry Orchard estate nearly 20 years ago. Parish council chairman Kate Tippen explained: “It was always
intended that the parish council would take over the play area, which was in need of upgrading, but we never had the finances to do it. This S106 money has allowed us to do just that and we are now looking at other areas to invest the money.” The money could be accessed be-
cause the play area adjoins village playing fields, which have been in line for a contribution from Redrow. Investigations are now under-
way into the possibility of in- stalling a youth shelter on the playing field, a quieter sports wall and an outdoor adult gym. Cllr Tippen said:“We are getting quotes for these features, all of which the public will have a chance to comment on.”
Footpathwait nearly over
THE final piece of a four-year fight to provide a safe route for pupils and pedestrians in Sutton Valence is expected to be finished by the end of the summer holidays. The battle for a pedestrian crossing on the A274 and a pavement to
the post office is a campaign that has prompted co-operation across the community, from farmers who have given land for the road safety measures, Sutton Valence School and the parish council who have provided funding and pressure. County councillor Eric Hotson has spent four years lobbying for
the work. He said: “It started with me funding a traffic survey from my highway fund. All the land transfers have been completed now and the county council can now start with the construction of the footpath, which will complete the scheme.”
Old pounds help hospice
HEART of Kent Hospice is hoping to encourage people to donate their old £1 coins to charity before the familiar round pound ceases as legal ten- der on October 15. The Coins for Care campaign is asking the public to empty their piggy
banks, loose change jars, and look down the backs of their sofas to sup- port the 1,300 patients with terminal illnesses cared for by the Aylesford hospice each year. Chief executive Sarah Pugh said donations from the public are crucial
to the care the hospice provides. She said: “We depend on the public every bit as much as they do on us, that’s why we hope people will get behind the hospice and make their old £1 coins really count.” Supporters can donate their coins at the Heart of Kent’s 14 charity
shops; at the Heart of Flavour café in King Street, Maidstone, or by tak- ing them into the Hospice in Aylesford. Youwill also be able to hand them over to official collectors in FremlinWalk on September 9.
