Rogue trader alert as man, 90s, is targeted
RESIDENTS are being warned about rogue traders at work in the area after a man in his 90s was tar- geted in Maidstone. Police say the elderly man was
asked to pay a large lumpsumin ad- vance for repairs to his drive in Mote Avenue. Two men called at his house on Thursday (July 7) and returned at around 1pm on Monday (July 10) when they are said to have de- manded a larger amount of cash in advance of the work being started. The victim then went to his bank to withdraw the money. Twomen fromMaidstone, aged 58
and 28, and a 16-year-old boy, from Wales, have now been arrested on suspicion of fraud. Chief Inspector Mick Gardner
said: “We are treating this as an iso- lated case but would like to remind people how they can stay safer in their homes.” The Kent Police officer said that precautions householders can take include: - Locking back doors and win-
dows before answering your front door. Never leave your front door
unattended. If you need to get some- thing, close it until you return. - Using a spyhole and askwhothe
caller is; then keep the door on the chain. - Check their identification, even if
they have a pre-arranged appoint- ment. - If you doubt the caller is genuine,
ask them to leave and come back at a time convenient to you and when you've had a chance to ask someone to be with you.
Youcan also contact Trading Stan-
dards with their vehicle details, com- pany name, contact details and any other information you have. - Before allowing any work to be carried out, it is best to obtain a quote or a second quote from a recognised firm. - Do not pay anyone for work be-
fore it is carried out, and certainly never go to the bank to draw out cash if a lift is offered by the people who knock on the door.

target on phone RESIDENTS in Maidstone have beenwarned by Kent Police to be on their guard against phone scam- mers.
Locals in the county town and the
wider borough are advised to be cautious after reports that two peo- ple in Maidstone received phone calls from fraudsters saying they are due a large amount of cash. OnWednesday July 26, the poten-

Graham Curtis said: "These fraud-
sters are very plausible and will sometimes pretend to be from an or- ganisation or company you trust such as a bank or the police. "They will often know some of
your personal information and ...if you receive one of these calls, do not give them any additional informa- tion, just end it immediately and wait at least five minutes before using your telephone in order to clear your line from the scammer.”
