Visits & Visitors at Woodbridge Bowls Club

432 Woodbridge Sqn Air Cadets

Meet Winston Churchill

A WeeKeND of celebrations at the 100 year Anniversary of the Royal Flying Corps establishing a base at Martleshamheath was supported by Cadets and staff from local Air Cadet Units based in Woodbridge, Leiston, Ips- wich and Felixstowe. They helped the organisers to raise funds for the Royal Air Force Benevolent fund, help for heroes, and local charities, Lap- wings andhome Start, by assist- ing with Car Parking, marshal- ling the Drop Zone for the Brit- ish Army Red Devils Parachute Display team, along with many other activities over the weekend. The event concluded with a

parade to commemorate the 100 years of the Royal Flying Corps and the unveiling of a commem- orative plaque remembering all those who served at the air base from 71 Sqn of the RAF manned by Volunteer Pilots of the United

States Air Force during the Sec- ond World War. Cadet Flight Sergeant Piia

Gubbins said “The highlight of the weekend has been watching the Red Devils parachute into the arena and the Spitfire and hurricane fly over head.” Flying Officer John Kay, Offi-

cer Commanding 432 Wood- bridge Sqn Air Training Corps, said, “It’s been a great weekend and a pleasure for the Cadets, from all four Squadrons, to sup- port this event, help raise money for the local charities and to learn a little bit more about the history behind the RAF sta- tioned at Martlesham heath. It was an honour to take the Salute from the Red Devils after their parachute display into the arena, who help to support fundraising events all over the UK and pro- mote the Parachute Regiment of the British Army.”

IN addition to the usual vis- its from opposing teams, the month of June saw some visi- tors coming through the Green Door that we don’t usually see. The first to arrive was Mark Royal with his ‘Roadshow’. For those who don’t know Mark he is ‘Mr Bowls’ and his roadshow features everything a bowls player could possibly need to pursue the sport. From the smallest items such as the wedges used to anchor woods and jacks when measuring, through complete sets of new or partly used bowls. he also features a full range of clothing, from shoes to caps and visors. Our second distinguished vis- itor was Mr John White, Presi-

dent of Suffolk County Bowls Association. he was accompa- nied by Area Secretary David Schofield. Both guests stayed to watch the Samford League match between WBC and Wal- dringfield ‘B’. Afterwards they met both teams and also said hello to Mark Royal. The com- ments from all our visitors were positive and all remarked on the friendly atmosphere of the club. If you too wish to find out

NEWS FROM DEBEN ROTARY

eARLY July was a busy period for the Rotary Club of Wood- bridge Deben. On July 2nd club members, assisted by members of our Satellite Club, helped in transporting people with sight impairment to the 40th anniver- sary celebration of Sound On, the Ipswich and District talking newspaper. Over the first two weeks of the

month we visited four schools, Melton Primary, Bawdsey, Gorseland and Rushmere hall, to distribute Dictionaries for Life. The dictionaries, which are a Rotary initiative, are either retained by the schools for use by the pupils, or in some cases given to leavers for reference during the next stage of their education. The club was also pleased to

be able to assist at the Martlesh- am heath 100 celebrations by acting as bucket collectors and manning a stall promoting the club’s activities.

Farlingaye Acoustic Evening

ON Thursday 13th July Farlin- gayehigh School held their first outdoor acoustic evening – a festival-like musical event involving the whole community. Local and national charities were invited to raise awareness for their causes with particular emphasis on local issues and on mental health and wellbeing. Guests enjoyed a barbecue

before relaxing on the field to enjoy the wonderfully talented students performing a range of songs including Johnny Cash, Whitneyhouston, Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys. The charities who attended included stem4, Suffolk Mind, Dementia Friends, headway Suffolk, Action (supporting medical research for children), eACh, the east Anglian Children’s hospice appeal and Farlingaye’s own online safety group.

Midway through the evening,

sixth form student Iona Balleny spoke about the need to remove the stigma around mental health and issued a call for students, teachers, parents and charities to work together to raise awareness and support. head of Music, Gemma Mar-

tino, who organised the evening said: “‘I really wanted to create an evening where students, their families, the local community and local charities could come together to listen, to talk and share thoughts and be able to access specialist support. It has been a tough year for the school community and we wanted to acknowledge this but also the fact that we have survived it, together. We wanted a mix of ages to be able to enjoy an eve- ning of music and food, a com- munity that could come together

in support of one another. It was a really fabulous event. Working in partnership with some of the older students we set out to cre- ate the right tone and musical programme for the evening. Stu- dent performers were from Year 9 and above and the performanc- es were powerful and sincere. The students committed totally to the event, believing in what they were doing. The whole evening shows what can be done when we all come together for a common purpose.” Farlingaye continues to work

closely with its community through concerts, fundraisers and links with parents and local businesses. The issue of mental health and wellbeing in young people is currently in the coming year.
