Border Basics Help yourself to faster airport

security this summer By Michael Badejo

With a little foresight, clearing customs can be painless. I

t’s summer, you’ve been planning your big vacation for a while, and all you can think about is getting to the lake/beach/mountain (select dream location here). But with your mind’s eye fixed on your des-

tination it’s easy to forget about the journey, particularly security screening at the airport. Te good news is that being prepared can help you

breeze through the screening checkpoint, leaving you more time to shop, eat or just relax before your flight. Do your homework before you go

• Find out whether your item goes in carry-on or

check and if it can/can’t fly with our searchable “What Can I Bring?” list online • Create a travel-checklist to cover all your needs (in-

sert reminder to water plants here) • Check out travel tips for all sorts of challenges – from

large sport equipment and medical supplies to travelling with pets

Once you hit the front of the line:

• Have your boarding pass ready to show to the screen- ing officer • Place any loose change, keys and small electronics

(e.g. smartphones, tablets, cameras) in your carry-on bag – then drop your bag into the bin • Be prepared to put large electronic devices (e.g. lap-

72 • Summer 2017

tops, gaming consoles, DVD players) in a separate bin Did you know…

One of the biggest hold-ups at security is having too

many liquids, aerosols or gels. Here are some key rules to remember: • You are allowed one 1 L bag for these items but don’t

overstuff it: no seal – no deal! • Containers over 100 ml need to be checked. And if

you arrive at security with a cup of coffee or a water bot- tle in your hand – be prepared to chug if it’s over 100 ml.

• Exceptions to the 100 ml rule include:  Medication  Liquids for children under two years of age • All containers should be taken out of your carry-on

bag for inspection by the screening officer. Go with the flow

download CATSA’s free mobile app for more tips and information, including wait times for security at most major airports.
