have one for Canada at Ottawa’s oldest tavern –the Cha- teau Lafayette, which was established in 1849. Before you go, check out the historic courtyards behind the shops on Sussex, where you can capture some stunning photos. Art lovers should not miss stopping at the National
Gallery of Canada to take in the newly opened Canada’s Masterpieces: Our Stories. Te exhibit showcases Indig- enous and contemporary art. Should you happen to be there in the evening be sure to take in the picturesque sunset from Nepean Point. An enormous 9.25 metre bronze spider is sure to intrigue visitors. Rideau Canal
Te Rideau Canal, opened in 1832, is the oldest con- tinuously operating canal in North America. It was de- signed to help traders navigate the waterway between the Ottawa River and Kingston. Lt.-Col. By’s masterpiece of stonemasonry on the control dams and locks were critical to the development of Ottawa. Exhibits commemorate Lt.-Col. John By as well as the workers who died during its construction. Te Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renting a bicycle is a wonderful way to experience the Canal and Ottawa in general as several bike paths wind

through the city. Rentals are available throughout Ottawa, but there is one near the ByWard Market as well as a few near the canal on Hawthorne Avenue and Bank Street south of the Queensway. Te Rideau Canal has bike paths on either side of it, and the Ottawa River provides splen- did views and photo opportunities. If you’re not biking, you can reach the canal from down-
town or stop in at Dows Lake. Here you will find a ma- rina where you can rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboats and enjoy the beauty of lake-life in the city. Further down the Rideau River you will find Hog's
Back Park. Tis was one of the most difficult places to build the canal due to the large rocks; however, today it offers breathtaking vistas and is a photographer’s dream. Te park, developed in the 1950s, has walking trails to explore the beauty of the area and the canal, of course, and offers historical displays. Parliament Hill is a scenic place for photos and there is a fantastic view of the Ottawa River behind the build- ings. Te Hill is walking distance from downtown and well worth a stroll through. Rideau Hall and its 79 acres of gardens are a beautiful place to spend an afternoon in the summer before you head back home.
