Hot Eats in The ‘Peg

Mercadito Latino 570 Sargent Ave.

Te format of Mercadito Latino is very much like the places that we love to visit in Mexico with the matriarch in the kitchen lovingly recreating her family recipes and her husband up front serving the tables and manning the cash register. Te food came out quickly and steaming hot. You could taste that all the concoctions had been freshly made. We were delighted by the tortilla soup that

we shared. Dotted with pieces of silky avocado, gooey cheese, pulled chicken, crispy tortilla strips and sour cream, it warmed us up nicely. We sampled “Revueltas” pupusas which meant we enjoyed cheese, beans and pork in all three corn flour pockets. We were full by this time and still had chicken

tacos coming to the table. If you think that tacos are always the Old El Paso style, you would be mistaken. Soft corn tortillas are eaten at almost every Mexican meal as a way of scooping up the fare. We had to have at least a bite and appreci- ated the subtle spiciness of the chicken and pep- pers inside the soft corn taco. My bite resulted in juices bursting out of the wrap and onto my plate (the sign of a very delicious taco).

Bouchee Boucher 101-300 Tache Ave.

I have yet to visit Bouchee Boucher for din-

ner, but I have been for both brunch and lunch and enjoyed each and every bite. Te bistro shares space with their own butcher shop, a recent urban trend in other large Canadian cities. Tey too have a fried chicken dish on their

brunch menu. In this case two huge pieces of fried chicken were perched atop a cornmeal and bacon waffle (the bacon is ingeniously added to the waffle batter). Te kale slaw was a lovely anecdote to the meal.

I selected the eggs Benedict so that I could taste the house back bacon and the “leaf lard” biscuit. All the hearty tastes reminded me fondly of breakfasts on my grandparents’ farm. A sausage, tomatoes and egg dish evoked sam- pling a Mediterranean dish called shakshuka. In this case merguez (also Mediterranean) was included in the tomato casserole where the eggs are baked right in the sauce. Lunch offerings were equally fine but what I

am really looking forward to sampling is their DIY Caesar bar where you chose each ele- ment including garnishes of crispy bacon and spicy pickled eggs!
