// Ostlers at Number 1
Us ladies took a smaller approach to our main meal selection, but not small in flavour. A simple fillet steak served with Ostlers fries, grilled field mushrooms, roasted vine tomatoes topped off with a rocket and parmesan salad may not sound as adventurous, but when it’s quality and cooked right it doesn’t have to be adventurous does it? The taste of the fillet had tongues wagging in praise all the way home and whilst sauce wasn’t necessary, there was a good selection available. The final main celebrated all things Malaysian, a samphire stir fry with delicious plump king prawns and some seriously good coconut rice with prawn crackers. There was no mistaking the samphire, this taste of Asia was exemplary.
Desserts, oh yes, some of us managed to find room for dessert! A simple dish of ice cream from the dozen or so flavours on offer was enough for me, but if you have room try the homemade sticky toffee pudding, a large slab served with vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce, but so light it went down a storm. A warm chocolate brownie baked with a serious helping of chocolate and a tasty Crème brûlée with beautiful fresh rhubarb also hit the spot.
Each course impressed as much as the last, you couldn’t fault the quality of ingredients, the taste of creativity of dish nor the presentation. The attentive staff know when to be present and when to leave you to enjoy the feast, the whole dining experience is superb and seamless. The atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable, it’s a place where if you want to giggle with friends it won’t raise an eyebrow from other guests, but equally feels right for an intimate dinner for two.
I can’t actually enthuse enough about the food, whatever your taste there is something for you, and no matter how hard you are to impress, I’m sure this restaurant will manage it. I defy you to leave this no-nonsense bistro without loving both the food and service and vowing to come back again? The tempting wine list offers a great selection of old and new world wines, the house Sauvignon from France is a great wine and at an equally great price – so worth bearing in mind and is a refreshing change to the New Zealand variety that has become so popular at twice the price! Book and enjoy readers!
